Western puts four on district first team

FINDLAY — After an 8-2 regular season, Western Reserve had four players selected to the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association's Northwest District football team in Division VI. The district teams were released Thursday night by a media panel from outlets in Bucyrus, Celina, Defiance, Findlay, Fremont, Lima, Mansfield, Norwalk, Toledo, and Tiffin, respectively. Players selected to the first team are automatically eligible for selection to the All-Ohio teams, while select second-team players may also be chosen. The Roughriders finished 9-3 overall and won a first-round playoff game at Bluffton, the fourth all-time postseason win in program history. Three first-team selections on offense included junior running back Landyn Wiegel (1,202 yards, 26 TDs) and senior receiver Brexton Fraelich (46 catches, 861 yards, 9 TDs). They were joined by senior guard Will Taylor, who helped block for a WR offense that averaged 375 yards and 34 points per game this season. On defense, senior Blake Welch (67 tackles, 4 sacks) was a first-team selection on the line. Earning second team defense was senior defensive lineman Travis French (43 tackles, 1 sack). Honorable mention picks for the 'Riders included Hayden Keith (QB), Hayden Dobias (WR), Braylon Witherspoon (DL), and Dom Edwards (DB).
