Seven from Monroeville, St. Paul are first team

FINDLAY — Seven standouts from Firelands Conference rivals Monroeville and St. Paul earned spots on the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association's Northwest District football team in Division VII. The district teams were released Thursday night by a media panel from outlets in Bucyrus, Celina, Defiance, Findlay, Fremont, Lima, Mansfield, Norwalk, Toledo, and Tiffin, respectively. Players selected to the first team are automatically eligible for selection to the All-Ohio teams, while select second-team players may also be chosen. Monroeville senior interior lineman Brycen Dunlap was the Co-Lineman of the Year for the FC champion Eagles (9-3, 7-0). The 6-foot-2, 275-pound standout at guard anchored a Monroeville offense that averaged 337 yards and 34 points per game. He added 45 tackles and three sacks on defense. Junior quarterback Colt Clark was also first team for Monroeville. He was 81-of-154 passing for 1,234 yards and 17 touchdowns and also ran 135 times for 1,027 yards and 15 TDs on the ground. Junior defensive lineman Alec Schafer (42 tackles, four sacks) was a third first-team choice for the Eagles. For St. Paul (5-6, 4-3), senior receiver Fries was first team at the athlete position, as he earned first team FC honors at three different positions. As a receiver, he caught 40 passes for 580 yards with 5 TDs. Fries also ran for 454 yards and 10 TDs, finished with 49 tackles and two interceptions at outside linebacker, and punted 26 times for a 34.7-yard average. Joining him on the first team offense was junior kicker Nate Griffin, who was 3-of-4 on field goals — including a game-winner in the final seconds at Tiffin Calvert on Sept. 5 — and 41-of-45 on extra points. On defense, FC Defensive Back of the Year, junior Rafael Gross, was first team at linebacker for the Flyers. Gross finished with 134 tackles (13 for loss) with two sacks and a forced fumble in 11 games. Junior defensive back Levi Rospert (54 tackles, 4 INTs, 2 FRs, 9 PBUs) also earned first team. Area second team choices included Monroeville senior running back Connor Bores (927 yards, 13 TDs) and junior linebacker Cooper Cleary (83 tackles, 2 INTs). South Central senior offensive tackle Alex Hamons was also first team. Defensive lineman Isaac Krueger was honorable mention for Monroeville. Honorable mention picks for St. Paul included Nick Pocos (RB), Grant Kuhnle (QB), Alex Baca (OL), Connor Lindenberger (TE), Kade Houck (DL), and Nate Sandor (LB).
