Suspect in custody in Norwalk burglary

NORWALK — Police arrested a Norwalk man in connection with this week's break-in at the Knights of Columbus hall and AMVETS on West Main Street, and police say they recovered evidence after serving a search warrant at his home Thursday. Nathaniel O'Brien, 36, of Norwalk, was taken into custody following the investigation into the overnight burglary, which occurred sometime between late Tuesday and early Wednesday, according to a news release from Norwalk police. Police said a large amount of cash was stolen from both the Knights of Columbus and AMVETS offices, and that a fire exit, several safes and other machines inside were damaged. Officers initially released surveillance footage showing a man inside a utility area of the building and asked residents in the neighborhood to review their own security footage for anything suspicious. Those efforts, along with tips and follow-up interviews, helped move the investigation forward. On Thursday, investigators executed a search warrant at O'Brien's residence. "We did recover evidence related to the break-in, and the suspect made admissions during the investigation," Hamernik said. Police found money from the Knights of Columbus and a crowbar during their search warrant, the release states. The department's release indicates O'Brien was charged and faces additional charges, but does not indicate what specific charges he faces.
