Scary weather doesn't stop smiles

NORWALK — Despite gloomy skies and a forecast that had parents nervously checking the radar all day Thursday, Norwalk's annual trick-or-treat night went off without a hitch. Light rain and mist lingered through the afternoon, but by early evening the clouds finally parted — just in time for ghosts, goblins, and superheroes to take to the streets. Mayor Dave Light said city officials had been monitoring the weather closely. "We were thankful the rain stopped just minutes before trick or treat began," Light said. "However, the misting and cold weather did put a damper on what would have been a much larger crowd. Trick or treat is always scheduled a few months in advance to allow families to plan accordingly and continue their traditions." He added that the city made its decision to proceed only after reviewing conditions throughout the day. "While we were aware of the forecast predicting rain, my team closely monitored the weather radar throughout the day and made the best decision we could with the information available," Light said. "Conditions appeared to be safe enough for families to enjoy the evening and many still participated and were able to celebrate as planned." Residents across town reported lighter crowds than usual, but plenty of candy still changed hands. Bundled-up children darted from porch to porch under umbrellas and hoods, and by night's end, most said the weather didn't ruin their fun. For many, it was another Halloween to remember — one that started with worry, but ended in laughter and sugar-fueled smiles.
