Kids learn real-world skills

GREENWICH — In an age dominated by technology and rapid change, educators and parents alike are turning their focus to an often-overlooked area of learning: life skills. From managing finances to effective communication, life skills are increasingly recognized as essential tools for success in both personal and professional life. The South Central FFA Alumni with the assistance of Great Lakes Truck Center, held a Life Skills Day for the South Central FFA members to integrate life skills education into a school day to improve student confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. Members rotated through stations on how to jump start a car, how to use ratchet straps, how to properly prepare food to temperature to avoid illness, how to use a sewing machine, how to tie knots, and how to use torque wrenches and socket sets. The Alumni members have created a list of over 80 life skills and hope to over the course of a few years teach all of the skills to better prepare our FFA members for life after high school. A special thanks to the following groups and individuals for making the day happen: Great Lakes Truck Center, Army National Guard, Billy Webb, Sgt.Tyler McKinnon, Deputy Lance Seaman, Norm Gannett, Bob Gannett, Brandon Walcher, Kaylee Walcher, Becky Albright, Jason Riddle and Tom Lucha. Equipping young people with life skills ensures they are not only educated but also prepared — ready to navigate the challenges and opportunities of modern life.
