OHSAA football playoff pairings set

COLUMBUS — Following the conclusion of the football regular-season on Oct. 25, the Ohio High School Athletic Association announced the final computer ratings, playoff qualifiers and first-round pairings on Oct. 26. Unless otherwise noted, all first-round games will be played this Friday (Oct. 31), with kickoffs set for 7 p.m. With the reduction of playoff qualifiers per region from 16 to 12, the top four seeds in each region will receive a first-round bye. In the first round, the No. 5 seed will host the No. 12 seed, the No. 6 seed will host the No. 11 seed, the No. 7 seed will host the No. 10 seed, and the No. 8 seed will host the No. 9 seed. The better seeded team will serve as the host through the first three rounds of the playoffs. The regional playoffs will follow bracket format. Rebracketing will occur for the state semifinals. Regional quarterfinal (second-round) games will be played on Nov. 7, while regional semifinal (third-round) games will be played on Nov. 14. Neutral sites will be used beginning in the regional finals on Nov. 21. The state semifinals will be on Nov. 28, with the state championship games then hosted at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton over three days, Dec. 4-6. The Div. II state title game is at 7 p.m. Dec. 4. On Dec. 4, divisions IV (10:30 a.m.), III (3 p.m.) and I (7:30 p.m.) will be played on Dec. 5. The Saturday games include divisions VII, VI and V at the same times. Locally, four teams are among the playoff participants. Edison (7-3) is the No. 6 seed in Div. V Region 18 and will host No. 11 Port Clinton (6-4) this Friday in a first-round matchup. The Redskins won, 21-17, three weeks ago on Oct. 10 in Port Clinton. In Div. VI Region 22, Western Reserve (8-2) is the No. .10 seed and is in the playoffs for the 10th time in program history. The Roughriders visit No. 7 Bluffton (8-2) in the first round. In Div. VII Region 25, No. 9 St. Paul (5-5) heads to No. 8 Warren John F. Kennedy (5-5) in a first-round matchup that features a combined 46 playoff appearances, nine state runner-ups and three state championships between the two programs. Also in Region 25, Monroeville (8-2) is in the playoffs for a 20th time and is one of the four teams to earn a first-round bye as the No. 4 seed.
