Kids hear unique instruments

NORWALK — On Monday, Oct. 20, Daniel Scruggs from Peace Culture Music, came to entertain the children at Christian Day Nursery School. During Mr. Daniel's travels, he has collected hundreds of rare musical instruments from around the world. He shared a selection of these instruments from Bali, Yemen, Jamaica, Peru, Ethiopia, Navajo, Zimbabwe, Egypt and Ghana with the students. He also had the students interact with the music as they clapped their hands and knees, danced to different rhymes and showed pictures of people and instruments from different countries all over the world. Today's musical assembly was sponsored by Geo Trac Foundations. Daniel Scruggs created Peace Culture Music to share one-of-a-kind cultural education programs with communities across the globe — from pre-schools to grade schools to colleges. With Peace Culture Music, students are exposed to different cultures, diversify their perspectives, and are given access to the world beyond the walls of their classrooms. Using musical instruments and cultural experiences from across the globe, they aim to teach everyone how to dream a little bigger, love a little harder, and approach everything with curiosity. After having spent eight years in formal music studies and performance with the prestigious Colonial Williamsburg Fife and Drum Corps, which earned him a foundation in rudimental drumming, marching and performance, he continued formal music studies in percussion at the College of Charleston in South Carolina and Arabic Language immersion in Sana'a Yemen. He also has a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. On Wednesday, Oct. 29, Daniel Scruggs will be performing a "Community Free Concert" starting at 6 p.m. at Norwalk High School Performing Arts Center.
