Paving postponed on avenue project

NEW LONDON — The New London village council heard from village administrator Shawn Pickworth Monday that although the New London Avenue Project is progressing, it will not be paved this year as previously planned. He said one of the problems is the funding agencies are extremely slow in issuing checks, so there is a lag time in paying the contractors. This, in addition to other issues, has slowed progress. "It's been a struggle, but we'll get through it," Pickworth said. More meeting business On first reading, council passed a number of ordinances, two being changing the zoning on 118 East Main St. and a vacant lot on Walnut Street from single to multi-family. Another authorized nominal expenditures for refreshments or meals for various village events, and two amended the employee handbook relating to vacation time, sick leave, retirement and longevity pay. An ordinance to purchase the IWORQ Systems zoning software and services passed as an emergency. Employee Brian Cucco gave an update on a variety of departments, and he urged residents to pass the street levy on the November ballot. Hesaid the village maintains six bridges and 14 miles of roads, some of which have not been resurfaced for 30 years. The Park Gun Raffle is Nov. 8 at the Hileman Building.
