NMS boys win SBC Lake championship

TIFFIN — The Norwalk Middle School boys cross country team won the Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division championship on Oct. 11 at Hedges-Boyer Park in Tiffin. Led by Drew Hamernik in second place, who finished with a personal-best time of 11:53, the Truckers had three runners among the top 15. Parker Nickoli (12:32.3) was 10th and Caleb Cross (12:48.2) was 13th. Ethan Jones (12:58.6) was 16th; Parker Good (12:58.6) was 17th; and Madden Sigg (13:21.3) was 19th. Also for Norwalk, Zane Daniels (13:29.9) was 21st; Xander Thopson 914:10.2) was 27th; and Leland Thompson (16:44.7) was 34th. The NMS girls team finished in third place as a team. Layla Koch was fourth overall with a PR of 12:51.3, while Ivy Leavitt was 11th in 14:11.3. Malayna Sullivan (14:17) was 17th, followed by Aubrielle Cruey (14:35.5) in 16th, Liliana Mora (15:42.6) in 20th, and Krista Bergman (16:38.7) in 23rd. Two of Norwalk's top runners, Adelinn Sitterly and Harper Gilbert were competing in the SBC Lake volleyball tournament. The boys had to run below 14 minutes and the girls had to run below 16 minutes to qualify for the junior high state championships. "Nearly the entire team reached that threshold," NMS head coach Dave Daniels said. "We will be headed to Dublin Jerome this weekend with seven girls and seven boys to compete with runners from around the state. "The boys ran a great pack race to win," he added. "Coach (Lori) Wilken and I could not be more proud of this amazing group of runners that put in a lot of hard work, and the results showed."
