St. Paul, Monroeville end with victories

MILAN — The St. Paul volleyball team closed out the regular season with a three-set win over host Edison in a non-league match on Saturday. The Lady Flyers finish with a 16-6 record entering Wednesday's Division VII sectional title match against St. Mary Central Catholic (6-16). Meanwhile, Edison finished 9-13 entering its sectional final match against Western Reserve at Willard High School on Thursday. The Chargers won in five sets over the Roughriders back on Sept. 15. In Saturday's win, St. Paul posted scores of 25-14, 25-20, and 25-13. Shealyn Deeter and Brooklyn Cassidy each finished with 10 kills for the Flyers, who also got eight kills from Ella Kalizewski and six from Kegney Stoll. Annie Friend set 30 assists and served 13-for-14 with two aces, while Stoll was 22-for-23 serving with two aces. Also for St. Paul, Bella Guerra had 17 digs and served 13-for-14 with three aces. Lily Cuturic and Cassidy each added 11 digs. For Edison, Dana Preston had seven kills at the net, followed by Abby Cloud (6), Ella Booth (4), and Macari Harris (3). Peyton Bissell set 10 assists and Paige McFadden had eight, while Taylor Moore and Stella Brown each had 12 digs. Monroeville 3, Carey 0 MONROEVILLE — The state-ranked No. 5 Eagles reached the 20-win mark as they closed out the regular season Saturday with a three-set win over visiting Carey. Monroeville (20-2) won with scores of 25-22, 25-16, and 25-16. Ady Adams had 12 kills and Madi Reiber had 10 for the Eagles, who got 15 assists from Addison Lyons and 14 from Kaci Poths. Addison Homan had 20 digs and Alexa Adams had 10. Also for the Eagles, Alexa Adams had six kills and three aces, while Riley Platte had four kills and five blocks, and Gabby Loose had four kills. Maddy Miller also served three aces and Poths had two. The Eagles are off until Oct. 20, as they earned a No. 1 seed and have a bye to a 6 p.m. district semifinal match at Clyde High School. Monroeville faced the winner of Fremont St. Joseph (19-3) and Toledo Horizon Science, which will meet on Wednesday in Fremont. Monroeville fifth in final poll The Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association released its final state poll of the season on Oct. 12. In Division VII, Monroeville (20-2) finished with a No. 5 ranking. St. Paul (16-6) received votes to finish just outside of the top 10. Meanwhile, Mohawk (18-5), which defeated both the Eagles and Flyers, and are in the same district as Monroeville, finished ranked No. 8. In Div. V, SBC Bay co-champions Willard (18-3) and Huron (17-5) finished just outside the top 10 after also receiving votes. The two teams won on each other's home court to share the league title. Poll champions included Cincinnati Seton (Div. I), Whitehouse Anthony Wayne (Div. II), Akron Hoban (Div. III), Cincinnati McNicholas (Div. IV), Elyria Catholic (Div. V), New Bremen (Div. VI) and Tiffin Calvert (Div. VII). GIRLS SOCCER Norwalk 9, Mansfield Sr. 0 NORWALK — The Truckers (12-3-2) closed out the regular season with a big victory over the visiting Tygers on Saturday in a non-league match at Contractors Stadium. Claire Spettle scored five goals for the Truckers, raising her season total to 35 and her career total to 117. Xavi Immel scored twice and had an assist, while Audrey Sanders also had a goal and an assist. Also for Norwalk, CJ Bennett added a goal and Kira Sandor had an assist, while goalkeeper Becca Farmer earned the shutout. The Truckers host Shelby (8-7-2) in a Div. III sectional title match at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Norwalk beat the Whippets by a 3-0 score on Aug. 20 in the second match of the season, also at Contractors Stadium.
