Woods and chainsaws

Members from the Monroeville FFA chapter participated in the Forestry CDE on Sept. 18. The members who chose to participate in this CDE traveled to Pleasant Hill Lake Park for the contest! Members who participated were Isaac Krueger, Hayden Ryan, Garret Loose, Carter Carroll, Lilly Stein, Karissa Scheid & Abbie Bores. This is the first time the chapter has done forestry in several years so this trip was all about learning. Members have to participate in various activities for this CDE. One aspect was members learned how to use the Biltmore stick and determine logs out of a standing tree. At another station members had to walk through the woods and determine the species of trees that were marked. The last one in the woods is called timber cruising where the member gets a customer scenario and then determines the best logging practices of a woods. Along with the field activities members then went to the pavilion for more station activities. There was a timber tool identification station with all sorts of tools used in a variety of forestry activities. Chainsaw troubleshooting was another station where participants had to determine what was wrong or missing with the chainsaws. The last two activities were a knowledge test and a bug, insect and fungus identification station. Members had fun and learned a lot!
