FFA competes at Hocking College

NELSONVILLE, Ohio — On Sept. 27, 2025, four South Central FFA members participated in the Ohio FFA Forestry Career Development Event at Hocking College, which is an annual competition for students that tests skills in areas like timber cruising, tree identification, chainsaw use, and general forestry knowledge. Isabella Lucha, Claire Huffman, Macy Risner and Lindsey Martin. Members placed 24th in the state. The students competed in teams to demonstrate their competencies in natural resource management and forestry instruction. Timber Cruise: A practical exercise to estimate the volume of saw logs in a wooded area. Members participated in stations dealing with identifying and diagnosing issues with chainsaw components, recognizing different tree species, identifying various forestry tools and equipment, identifying diseases or other issues affecting trees and forests, timber stand improvement where members relate tasks to managing forest growth.
