'Lifelong dream' comes true

NORWALK — The Huron County commissioners' meeting opened Tuesday with a change in the lineup. Before the session began, Bob Morgan took the oath of office, becoming the county's newest commissioner and joining fellow commissioners Harry Brady and Tom Dunlap. The ceremony was conducted by Dunlap as Morgan was sworn in. Morgan's appointment fills the seat left vacant by former commissioner Brad Mesenburg, who resigned effective Sept. 12. Mesenburg cited health issues and family obligations in his resignation letter, which Dunlap read aloud during the following meeting. A swift appointment The Huron County Republican Central Committee met soon after Mesenburg's resignation and voted to recommend Morgan for the job. The commissioners accepted that recommendation, and Morgan began serving in an interim capacity late last month. "I've always wanted to serve my community in a meaningful way," Morgan said. "Being a county commissioner has been a lifelong dream of mine." He acknowledged the weight of the position, adding, "I don't take this lightly. My goal is to be accessible, honest, and to do the work the people expect of me." Morgan also said the public support he received "was humbling," and that his focus would be on building momentum, not starting over. "Now the questions start," he said. "How do I carry forward what Brad began — and how do I bring my own ideas to the table?" What happens next Ohio law requires that vacancies on a county commission be filled until the next general election, when voters decide who will complete the unexpired term. Morgan will serve the remainder of Mesenburg's term, which runs through Dec. 31, 2026. The seat will be on the ballot in the November 2026 general election, and Morgan has already announced that he intends to run for the full term. If another candidate prevails, Morgan's time on the board will conclude once election results are certified and a successor is sworn in. Until then, Morgan's appointment rounds out a full board again after several weeks with an empty seat. For now, Morgan says he's focused less on campaign talk and more on learning the rhythms of county government. "There's a lot to take in," he said. "But I'm ready to work."
