Norwalk tennis sweeps doubleheader

NORWALK — The Norwalk girls tennis team swept a non-league doubleheader against SBC Bay Division foes Huron and St.Mary Central Catholic on Tuesday at the Middle School courts. The Truckers (14-4) won both matches by 3-2 scores. Against St. Mary Central Catholic, Norwalk got wins at second singles, and both doubles positions. Addy Rospert beat Caitlyn Collins at second singles (6-0, 6-1). At first doubles, Alyssa Gruhlke and Aubrey Kluding defeated Lauren Maxwell and Bella Mathews (6-3, 7-5). The second doubles team of Chloe Hazelwood and Riley Helton beat Olivia Swain and Nadia Maxwell (6-2, 6-4). Rachel Spicer beat Norwalk's Lydia Trost in three sets at first singles, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5. At third singles, Leksi Jurczek fell in two close sets to Rae Roth, 7-6 (2), and 7-5. In junior varsity matches against SMCC, Ella Borgeson and Natalie Wiegel won 6-5, while Lily Ware fell 6-1 and Miley Gatschet and Keelie Cammarn lost, 6-4. Against Huron, Norwalk won at third singles and both doubles positions. Scarlet Schneider defeated Marta Glasow (6-3, 6-0) at third singles, while the first doubles team of Roxy Brummit and Abby Upton beat Ally Murray and Brynne Hartley (7-5, 6-3). The second doubles team of Vanessa Vazquez and Libby Lark beat Avery Dudziak and Blaire Johnson, 6-3, 7-6 (4). At first singles, Brooklyn Younce fell to Rachel Merckens (6-2, 6-0), and Nellie Ferguson fell at second singles to Emma Barnes (6-3, 6-0). In JV matches against the Tigers, Grace Knight and Emmie Leber won 6-4 and Lily McDuffie and Natalie Morales won, 6-1. Genevieve Riley and Carsyn Swick lost 6-5 and Valerie Samano and Nora Whaley lost 6-0. Norwalk heads to the Division II sectional tournament Thursday at Port Clinton. The Truckers then play their regular season finale Monday at Port Clinton. Tuesday was the final home match for Brummit, Hazelwood, McDuffie, Upton and Vazquez. GIRLS GOLF Norwalk competes at district BOWLING GREEN — The Truckers competed at the Div. I district tournament on Tuesday at Stone Ridge golf course in Bowling Green. The Truckers totaled a 435 as a team and were led by Catherine Beamer with a 106, and Allison Konik with a 109. Emerson Ulery and Evelyn Welschenbach each shot 110s, while Adyson Lepley had a 116. At the Div. II district held at Sycamore Springs in Findlay on Monday, Edison junior Annabelle Seville missed out on a playoff for the last individual spot by one stroke. Seville shot an 84, finishing birdie-bogey-bogey. She finished ninth overall while matching the score she shot last year (84) that got her to state. The Chargers finished 12th as a team with a 416. Leah Sharp shot a 107, Averi Wolf finished with a 108 and Ella Rogers carded a 117.
