Monroeville sweeps Western to stay atop FC

COLLINS — The state-ranked Monroeville volleyball team won three close sets over host Western Reserve to stay alone atop the Firelands Conference standings Thursday night. The Eagles — ranked No. 6 in the latest Division VII state coaches poll — posted scores of 25-21, 25-23, and 25-23 to improve to 15-2 overall and 10-0 in the FC. Monroeville is 30-1 in FC sets played. Madi Reiber paced the Eagles at the net with 15 kills. Ady Adams had 13 kills, followed by Alexa Adams with 10 and Haylee Morman with five. Addison Lyons set 20 assists and Kaci Poths had 18. Addison Homan led the defense with 26 digs. Maddy Miller had 15 and Addison Lyons and Poths each had 10, while Morman added eight. Lyons also served three aces, while Ady Adams had two. For Western Reserve (10-7, 5-5), Emma Hammond had 12 kills and Drew Clemons finished with seven. Jamie Muenz had 20 assists and also had 17 digs, while Makayla Case had 16 digs. At the service line, Stella Blake had 11 points and Kendall Warthling added five. Monroeville (15-2, 10-0) also won the junior varsity match in two, 32-30, and 25-13. St. Paul 3, S. Central 0 NORWALK — The Lady Flyers remained one back of Monroeville with a three-set sweep over the Trojans Thursday night. Ella Kalizewski finished with 15 kills for St. Paul (9-3, 9-1). Brooklyn Cassidy had eight kills, while Shealyn Deeter and Kegny Stoll each had five, and Aubrie Bogard had four. Annie Friend finished with 30 assists, while Lily Cuturic had 21 digs. Bella Guerra added 11 digs and Cassidy had 10. At the service line, Stoll was 15-for-15 with two aces. Friend was 16-for-18 with two aces and Cuturic was 12-for-13 with three aces. For South Central (5-11, 3-7), Taylor Smith had 18 digs, while Claire Howell and Bry Lopez each had 10. Autumn Fry had five kills and two blocks, while Lopez served 10-for-11 with an ace. St. Paul makes the long trip to Convoy Saturday for the Crestview Invitational, where it opens with longtime Midwest Athletic Conference power St. Henry (12-3). Norwalk 3, Sandusky 0 SANDUSKY — The Truckers got back in the win column with an SBC Lake road sweep over the host Blue Streaks Thursday night. Norwalk (9-6, 4-2) posted scores of 25-18, 25-15, and 25-11. Emily Tyler finished with 27 assists and was 10-for-11 serving with an ace for Norwalk. Sydney Moehlman had nine kills, while Bella Hernandez had seven kills and four blocks, and Ainslee King also had seven kills. Lola Schlotterer was 10-for-13 serving with two aces, while Sawyer Wineman was 10-for-11 with an ace, Reagan Mooney was 9-for-10 with two aces, and Maddie Gamble was 9-for-9 with one ace. Wineman led the defense with 24 digs. Gamble had 12, and Mooney added 11. Norwalk will host Clyde Tuesday in another SBC Lake match. Willard 3, Vermilion 0 WILlARD — The Crimson Flashes stayed within one of SBC Bay leader Huron after sweeping the Sailors Thursday night. Willard (13-3, 4-1) posted scores of 25-10, 25-18, and 25-15. Camryn Wiers paced the Flashes with eight kills, 10 assists, and was 8-for-10 serving with three aces. Leah Weiss was 11-for-14 serving with seven points and an ace, and also had nine kills and six digs. Also for Willard, Natalie Slone had six kills and 10 digs, and served 10-for-10 with six points. Emelia Tallman was 13-for-15 with 10 points and two aces, and also had nine assists. Teagan Schaffer added four kills and was 13-for-13 serving with nine points and five aces, and Mya Stephens added six assists. The big rematch at Huron (12-4, 6-0) — a five-set loss back on Sept. 4 — is Tuesday. Edison 3, Margaretta 0 CASTALIA — The Chargers (8-9, 4-2) picked up a road sweep over the host Polar Bears in SBC Bay action Thursday. Edison posted scores of 25-10, 25-10, and 25-14. The Chargers were led by Dana Preston with eight kills, and Peyton Taylor and Ella Booth with six. Taylor Moore had 18 digs and served 11 points, while Stella Brown had 10 digs and served seven points. Paige McFadden finished with 16 assists and Peyton Bissell added 11. Crestview 3, New London 2 NEW LONDON — The Wildcats fell to 10-8 overall and 5-5 in the FC with Thursday's five-set loss to the Cougars. Crestview (13-5, 6-4) posted scores of 25-17, 23-25, 25-18, 21-25, and 15-6. For New London, Pailee Wilson had 20 kills and five blocks. Gracie Thomas had 14 kills, 13 digs, 21 assists and served two aces, while Ava Ringler had 25 digs. Also for the 'Cats, Brooke Clouse had six kills, Addison Yetter finished with 17 digs, and Harper Clemons had 18 assists and 12 digs. TENNIS Perkins 4, Willard 1 PERKINS TWP. — The Crimson Flashes were defeated in Thursday's non-league match against the host Pirates. Winning for Willard was the first doubles team of Eli Buurma and Cora Clark. They beat Brynn Catlett and Jencyn Gennari, 3-2 (injury default). At first singles, Emma Steinmetz fell to Anna Ferback (6-2, 6-1). Evelyn Martinus lost to Olivia Lizzi at second singles (6-0, 6-3), and Jillian Strong lost to Katelynn Troyer at third singles (6-1, 6-0). Willard's second doubles team of Bella De Lara and Marina Ramos lost to Emma Beatty and Lexi Green (6-3, 6-4). JUNIOR HIGH NMS teams beat Sandusky NORWALK — The Norwalk Middle School volleyball teams defeated Sandusky in SBC Lake Division matches Wednesday in the NMS gym. The eighth-grade team improved to 8-4 with a twin in two, 25-13 and 25-14. Kalli Oates had seven aces at the service line, while Londynn Clifton, Stella Kipp, and Lilli Kipp each had two. Aubree Brutsche and Olivia Roth each had one. Brynn Sellers paced the defense and was a 100 percent server. Laney Schlotterer came up with key blocks at the net, while Oates had six kills. Clifton and Lilli Kipp had 4 kills each, and Harper Reamer, Stella Kipp and Brynn Sellers each had one. The seventh-grade Truckers improved to 11-1 in a two-set sweep, 25-14 and 25-22. Lexi Schmidt served six straight points in the first set, while Kayla Naseman led the offense with key assists for kills by Harper Gilbert, Schmidt and Adeline Sitterly. Norwalk fell behind 11-1 in the second set before battling back to win. Ava Iehle Ball and Grace Emmons helped lead the comeback at the service line. Both teams travel to Clyde on Monday and Tiffin Columbian on Wednesday next week.
