Planes, food and flyovers at the airport

NORWALK — The Huron County Airport welcomed about 150 community members to its annual open house, giving families, students and aviation enthusiasts a rare chance to see aircraft up close and learn more about aviation in the region. "The purpose of the open house was to welcome the community to explore the airport, meet the people who keep it running and experience the excitement of flight right here in Huron County," airport manager Scott Sparks said. A highlight of the day was the appearance of a Boeing Stearman PT-17, brought in by the Indiana Commemorative Air Force. The airport board voted to fund the aircraft's appearance fee, allowing the public to enjoy a unique piece of aviation history. "The Stearman not only provided scenic rides for those who purchased them, but it also performed a special flyover at the Monroeville-New London football game as part of Military Night," Sparks said. Attendees were able to get "up close and personal" with the plane. "At the open house, people could see the aircraft up close, talk with its pilots and mechanic and watch it operate throughout the day," Sparks added. Guests also enjoyed food from Banche's Famous Philly's & Dogs under a tent and tables provided by Health Grade Networks. The Ohio State Highway Patrol landed a Cessna 182, giving visitors the opportunity to meet with the patrolman-pilot. Additional aircraft were also on display, allowing the public to explore and ask questions. While turnout did not fully meet expectations, Sparks emphasized the event was still a success. "This was an excellent learning opportunity and a strong foundation for future events," he said. "Advertising was limited this year, which we know is an area we can improve." Some attendees expressed interest in airplane rides, but Sparks clarified that federal regulations restrict those opportunities. "Unless it's through a sanctioned program like Young Eagles, our pilots can't offer rides," he explained. Sparks also shared his personal experience riding in the Stearman. "I couldn't pass it up," he said. "Before takeoff, the pilot asked where I lived, and I texted my Dad to step outside. As we flew, we went over my dad's house, where he was waving in the yard, and then over my own home." Sparks colorfully described the exhilaration he felt riding in the antique plane. Sitting in that open cockpit, hearing the engine roar, and feeling the wind rush by was unforgettable. It reminded me of what flying was like more than 80 years ago — simple, raw, and purposeful." The open house also highlighted ongoing airport improvement projects, including: • Obstruction removal • Electrical vault and lighting upgrades; Construction is scheduled for this winter, including LED runway and taxiway lighting, a new wind cone, and beacon relocation. • Runway rehabilitation; Design work is planned for 2026, and construction for 2027. Despite modest attendance, the event energized organizers, according to Sparks. "This experience has given us a clearer vision of what works, what can be improved, and how to make the next Open House even more successful," he said. He also offered thanks to those who made the event possible. "We especially thank Jon Christman of Health Grade Networks for renting the tent, tables, and chairs, and Scott Christophel of the Firelands Aero Club for his help setting up and coordinating details," Sparks said. "We're grateful to the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Indiana Commemorative Air Force for their participation, which made the day even more memorable." According to Sparks, the airport plans to make this a regular community event moving forward.
