Plymouth falls in FC shootout

PLYMOUTH — Visiting Mapleton scored the go-ahead touchdown with 1:09 left in the game to edge Plymouth, 30-28, in a Firelands Conference game on Sept. 19 at Alumni Field. The Big Red (0-5, 0-2) opened the scoring on a 9-yard run by quarterback Lincoln Distl at the 8:34 mark of the first quarter. He then kicked the extra point. The Mounties (2-3, 1-1) answered with an 8-yard TD run and added the 2-point conversion for an 8-7 lead with 3:56 left in the first quarter. Much of the second quarter was scoreless until the Mounties scored on a 1-yard run with 1:06 left in the half. The conversion run pushed the lead to 16-7 at halftime. Plymouth was teetering after the Mounties scored in under three minutes to start the second half. Mapleton had a 53-yard TD pass at the 9:30 mark of the third quarter, though the conversion failed for a 22-7 lead. Back came the Big Red. They needed just 92 seconds to answer in the form of a 53-yard TD run to make it 22-14 at the 7:58 mark. Exactly five minutes later, Miller then scored on a 43-yard run. The conversion failed for a 22-20 deficit. After more back-and-forth, the Big Red then took the lead on a 9-yard run by Ben Trimmer with 6:08 left in the game. Miller ran in the conversion for a 28-22 lead before the Mounties scored on a 14-yard pass with 1:09 remaining. The Big Red were unable to keep the game tied as the Mounties added the 2-point conversion to cap the 90-yard scoring drive. The Mounties then intercepted Distl in the end zone to end the game. Plymouth ran 40 times for 297 yards, led by Miller totaling 217 yards and 2 TDs on 21 attempts. Trimmer ran nine times for 40 yards and Distl totaled 30 yards on seven attempts. The two teams combined for 39 first downs, 664 yards and 58 points. Plymouth travels to Crestview (3-2, 2-0) next Friday. Crestview 44, South Central 7 GREENWICH — The Trojans (0-5, 0-2) were able to hang with the Cougars early, but the visitors proved to have to much firepower in Friday's FC matchup. Crestview (3-2, 2-0) led 7-0 less than three minutes into the game when QB Liam Kuhn connected with Carson Keener for a 47-yard TD pass. South Central answered early in the second quarter when Greyson Fisher scored on a 4-yard run, and the PAT tied the score at 7-7. The Cougars extended the lead to 10-7 on a 41-yard field goal from Keith Abshire. Ayden Reymer added a 10-yard run to help Crestview to a 17-7 halftime lead. Less than three minutes into the third quarter, the Cougars got a 13-yard TD from Wyatt Barber. After a quick stop, Kuhn found Max Durbin for a 55-yard TD pass and a 30-7 lead. Crestview removed all doubt on a 1-yard run with 2:47 left in the third, then Kuhn closed the scoring with a 19-yard TD pass to Abshire with 4:25 left in the game. Woodmore 62, Willard 20 WILLARD — The visiting Wildcats lit up the scoreboard for 62 points in a SBC River Division game on Sept. 19 at Terry King Stadium. After a 2-0 start, Willard lost its third straight game and have allowed 164 points in those defeats to fall to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the River. Willard hosts Northwood next week, it's fourth straight home game on the schedule in a season where it has six games at the venue.
