School report card released

With the state report cards just released, the board of education and superintendent Brad Romano spent much of their meeting Monday discussing New London's score of 3 out of a possible 5. Romano explained a 3 indicates the district has met expectations and state standards, falling higher or lower in some categories. He discussed each category and said overall it was a successful report card, and the district would continue working to make improvements in all areas. In other business, Romano reported the fieldhouse should be completed by the end of October or earlier, and he updated the board on thecapital improvement plan. He said House Bill 8 is a parent's bill of rights and summarized its requirements, many of which the district already follows. Treasurer Jim Hudson gave a financial summary and said thanks to the actions of this and other boards and administrators, the district is in solid financial shape. Due to this, the board recently voted not to ask for a levy renewal that would have been on the November ballot. In addition to several routine matters, the board approved hiring paraprofessional Rylee Hopkins, the resignation of pre-K intervention specialist Carolyn Hamilton, a new bus driver training program, a list of board policy revisions, out of state trips for the FFA and the softball team and the appointment of Kathy Mitchell to the public library board.
