Edison girls win overall Bay title

NORWALK — The Chargers feel like they could have done better. Edison's girls golf team took second with a 392 on Monday, finishing six shots behind Margaretta. In the overall standings, the Chargers are SBC Bay champions with 38 points while the Polar Bears were second with 31 points. "The girls wanted to go undefeated, but this is why you do the regular-season and build that lead," Edison coach Shayne Fischer said. "Hats off to Margaretta. A lot of their girls played well. Our girls played well, but not as well as we normally do." Huron was third Monday with a 424 while Vermilion (446), Port Clinton (460) and Willard (474) rounded out the field. Annabelle Seville took overall medalist honors with a 76. Margaretta's Ellyse Schaefer was second with a 78. "Annabelle played like Annabelle plays," Fischer said. "She was two-under at one point and probably a little disappointed it got away from her a bit. She double-bogeyed late and I told her she needed to focus and finish well. She did. That's something she struggled with last year. It might have taken her three or four holes to get over last year, but that's the difference between her last year and this year." Leah Sharp added a 98 for the Chargers while Ella Rogers and Averi Wolf each carded a 109 to round out the scoring for Edison. "We feel good about winning the conference title," Fischer said. "It's a long season. We went undefeated in the regular-season in 9-hole matches. I'm very proud of our bottom girls. They've gotten better as the year has gone on. That was a big question mark coming into the season. We knew Annabelle and Leah were good players. We weren't sure about the younger girls." A lesson can be learned from not bringing your best game every single day. Edison has its sights set on a long postseason run, but the consistency has to be there with tough teams everywhere in the sectional and district. "Each and every stroke matters," Fischer said. "We always talk about that. Valley View (in Galion) is a tough course. A couple of the girls won't see the course except for practice rounds, so that'll be a challenge for them. We want to get district and see where we compare to other teams. "We'll see a lot of good teams at districts. We have that opportunity to see where the level of competition is at compared to us."
