Semi hits buggy

WILLARD — Two people were injured when a semi truck struck a horse-drawn buggy in Huron County last week. At about 9:40 p.m. last Wednesday, Sept. 3, a semi driven by a 50-year-old Columbus man struck the buggy at the intersection of U.S. Route 224 and Edwards Road, injuring two girls from the Mennonite community in Willard, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Troopers with the Norwalk post said the buggy, operated by a 16-year-old, was heading north on Edwards when it moved into the path of the eastbound semi. The crash destroyed the buggy and left both riders hurt. Investigators also noted the buggy was not equipped with a light. One passenger was flown by LifeFlight to Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center and was reported in stable condition when transported from the scene. The second was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. The horse pulling the buggy was not injured. By the time troopers arrived at the scene, the girls had already been taken for treatment. The buggy driver was cited for failure to yield, according to the accident report. Patrol urges caution Lt. Jordan Schwochow of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said drivers should be alert as fall brings earlier darkness. "With darkness setting in earlier, rural roads without strong supplemental lighting can be especially hazardous," Schwochow said. "Drivers should be cautious not only for buggies, but also for bicycles and pedestrians. Accidents like this can be devastating." Safety on rural roads Troopers say horse-drawn vehicles are a regular part of traffic in Huron County and remind motorists to adjust their driving accordingly. Drivers are urged to slow down on country roads, allow extra space when following a buggy, and wait for long, clear stretches before passing. Patrol officials also stress the importance of reflective triangles and proper lighting on buggies so they can be seen after dark.
