Western blanks Wynford in rout

COLLINS — The Western Reserve football team got back in the win column with a 46-0 victory over visiting Bucyrus Wynford on Sept. 5 at Bachelder Field. The Roughriders finished non-league play at 2-1 and will host Mapleton (1-2) in the Firelands Conference opener next week. After Western's defense held up on the first series, the Roughriders drove down the field before being faced with a fourth-and-goal from the Wynford 2-yard line. Quarterback Colton Meagrow then found Tyler Wood for the short touchdown pass, though the extra point kick was no good for a 6-0 lead. In the second quarter, after several long gains, Landyn Wiegel caught an 8-yard pass on a screen play from Meagrow for six more points and a 12-0 lead. Wiegel then scored on a 4-yard run, and added the 2-point conversion for a 20-0 lead. With Wynford driving just before halftime, Brexton Fraelich then came up with an interception to preserve the shutout. In the third quarter, Cooper Roe scored on a 15-yard run to make it 26-0. Wiegel added a 21-yard scoring run, and the extra point was good to make it 33-0. The fourth quarter saw Western added on two more scores. Jaxson Davidson scored from 28 yards out, then added a 30-yard run to make it 46-0. Western was coming off a 21-0 loss at Margaretta on Aug. 29. "I'm really proud of the way our guys responded tonight," Western head coach Ty Stevenson said. "We played really well in all three phases of the game. Colton did a great job of running the offense in his second start, and it felt like our guys rallied around him. "Landyn really ran hard again tonight, and the line did a great job communicating and blocking," he added. "Our defense played our best game of the year. I'm really proud of the way they stepped up tonight." Wiegel ran 20 times for 159 yards and 2 TDs for Western. Meagrow was 11-of-14 passing for 119 yards with 2 TD passes to Wiegel and Wood. New London (2-1) ran four offensive plays and had three touchdowns in jumping on the visiting Wildcats early. New London travels to Crestview (1-2) to open Firelands Conference play on Sept. 12. Wellington 22, Plymouth 6 PLYMOUTH — The Big Red couldn't overcome two second-quarter scores by the visiting Dukes in Friday's non-conference loss. Trailing 15-0, Plymouth (0-3) got on the scoreboard when Keegan Beverly scored on a 13-yard run with 33 seconds left in the first half. Beverly ran 11 times for 78 yards to pace Plymouth, while Isaiah Miller ran 17 times for 64 yards. The Big Red travel to St. Paul (1-2) on Sept. 12. Rittman 14, S. Central 12 GREENWICH — The visiting Indians edged the Trojans to improve to 3-0 with Friday's non-conference win. South Central (0-3) looks to get in the win column this week when it hosts Monroeville in their FC opener.
