Weekends without Hunger returns

NORWALK — "Weekends without Hunger…Feeding our Future" will begin its weekend food distribution this Friday, Sept. 12, marking its thirteenth year of operation in our Norwalk Catholic and City Schools. A committee of community members, initially organized by former Norwalk City Schools Superintendent Virginia Poling, plans to continue to address the hunger needs of eligible kindergarten through sixth-grade students in both the Norwalk Catholic and City Schools during the 2025-26 school year. A group of dedicated volunteers distributes the free bags of food, which go out to the registered students on Fridays during the school year. All of the food items are purchased through Second Harvest Food Bank. The names of the children are kept strictly confidential; the volunteers only are told how many bags are to be delivered to each classroom. The Weekends without Hunger program is free to financially eligible children in the Norwalk Catholic and Norwalk City Schools. Children who were previously registered for the 2024-25 school year need not register again. In order for all other children to receive twelve items of food each week, their parents can register for this free food in the following ways: 1. Register at their child's respective school on a paper application; 2. Go to the Norwalk City Schools website, norwalktruckers.net, to register online. Tap on their Quick Link, then Food and Nutrition Services, then Weekends without Hunger; 3. Use the Norwalk City School's "Peach Jar", using the QR code; or 4. Go to the Salvation Army or the Food Bank to register for this free food program. It takes less than five minutes to register for the Weekends without Hunger program. Children must be registered by Sept. 12 to have a bag of food delivered to their classrooms beginning on Friday, Sept. 26. Since the food is pre-ordered, children can continue to be registered throughout the year, but will not be able to receive food until two weeks after they have been registered.
