Norwalk sweeps Clyde to stay atop Lake

The Norwalk girls tennis team maintained its spot atop the SBC Lake Division with Thursday's sweep over visiting Clyde at the Middle School courts. All five matches were in straight sets for the Truckers (8-3, 7-0), who lead Tiffin Columbian by one match in the loss column with three league contests remaining. Lydia Trost beat Ariah Farrar at first singles (6-4, 6-3), while Addy Rospert topped Linn Marx (6-2, 6-1) at second singles. Leksi Jurczek did not drop a game at third singles in a win over Ava Fosnight (6-0, 6-0). The first doubles team of Alyssa Gruhlke and Aubrey Kluding defeated Delaney Fritz and Adriana Barnes-Ortmann (6-2, 6-1). The second doubles tandem of Chloe Hazelwood and Riley Helton also won by the same score (6-2, 6-1). In junior varsity matches, Roxy Brummit and Brooklyn Younce (6-1); Abby Upton and Vanessa Vazquez (6-2); Nellie Ferguson and Libby Lark (6-2); and Lily Ware (6-0) were winners. Also competing was Nora Whailey and Valerie Samano (5-6); Keelie Cammarn and Carson Swick (2-6); and Genevieve Riley and Miley Gatschet (1-6). Norwalk has a big test in its next match when it entertains Division I power Perrysburg next Tuesday. Huron 3, Edison 2 HURON — The Tigers edged the Chargers for an SBC Bay win on Wednesday. Liz Campbell won at first singles over Rachel Merckens (7-5, 6-1). Huron's Emma Barnes defeated Jenna Keoghan at second singles (1-6, 6-4, 6-3), while Edison's Scarlett Bennett beat Brynne Hartley at third singles (3-6, 6-2, 6-4). At first doubles, Edison's Faith Maschari and Teagan Ferrell lost to Avery Dudziak and Blaire Johnson (6-2, 6-1). The team of Sophia Crank and Sydney Merckens won by default at second doubles. Willard 3, Huron 2 HURON — The Crimson Flashes won two of the three positions in singles play to earn an SBC Bay Division win over the Tigers on Tuesday. Evelyn Martinus defeated Ally Murray at second singles for Willard, 6-3, 7-6 (3). Jillian Strong then won at third singles over Crank (6-0, 6-4). Willard won the match when the second doubles team of Belle De Lara and Marina Ramos defeated Huron's Dudziak and Johnson (7-5, 6-4). At first singles, Emma Steinmetz fell to Huron's Merckens (6-2, 6-3), while the first doubles team of Emie Buurma and Cora Clark lost a close three-set match to Barnes and Hartley (5-7, 6-3, 6-4). Vermilion 3, Edison 2 MILAN — The Chargers won the first two spots in singles play in Tuesday's SBC Bay loss to the visiting Sailors. Cambell won at first singles over Alexa Guitar (6-1, 6-0) and Keoghan beat Lily Fisher (6-0, 6-1) at second singles. The Sailors won third singles by forfeit. Edison's Bennett and Maschari fell to Ava Leslie and Cora Frederick (7-6 (5), 6-0) at first doubles. The second doubles team of Ilah Reynolds and Teagan Farell lost to Paige Dodge and Megan Wade (6-0, 6-1). Willard 4, Vermilion 1 WILLARD — The Crimson Flashes used a third set tiebreaker at third singles to help pick up an SBC Bay win over the Sailors on Wednesday at the Dean Ave. Complex. Strong outlasted Megan Wade at third singles, 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 for Willard. Martinus also won, as she defeated Cora Frederick at second singles (6-3, 6-1). At first doubles, Buurma and Clark beat Dodge and Guitar (6-2, 6-3). De Lara and Ramos at second doubles beat Colleen Traut and Ava Bunn (7-5, 6-2). Also for Willard, Steinmetz fell at first singles to Ava Leslie (6-4, 0-6, 6-1).
