Norwalk splits two at host Invitational

NORWALK — The Norwalk High School volleyball team split a couple matches at its annual Invitational on Aug. 30 at NHS. Norwalk (2-3) fell to Elyria Catholic, 25-12, 25-13, in its first match of the day. The Panthers (4-0) won all three matches at the tournament. In the loss, Emily Tyler was 40-of-40 setting with nine assists and also had four digs. Sawyer Wineman was 5-for-5 serving and had four digs, while Reagan Mooney was 4-for-4 serving with two aces. Ainslee King also had four kills and was 6-for-7 serving. The Truckers finished their day with a 25-10, 25-16 win over Danbury. Wineman had five kills, was 7-for-8 serving with four aces, and also led the defense with 13 digs. King had three kills and four blocks, and Sydney Moehlman had three blocks. Also for Norwalk, Tyler was 21-of-21 setting with seven assists. Mooney was 8-for-8 serving, while Lola Schlotterer was 9-for-11 serving and Maddie Gamble had seven digs. Meanwhile, the Crimson Flashes (6-2) took their first two losses of the season with a 1-2 record. Willard lost to Elyria Catholic, 25-13, 25-21. Camryn Wiers had seven kills, eight assists and five digs for the Flashes. Leah Weiss had six kills and eight digs, and Natalie Slone had five kills and six digs. Also for Willard, Emelia Tallman was 7-for-7 serving with six digs and five assists. Alexis Rettig had 14 digs. The Flashes then rebounded with a win in two over Firelands (3-4), 25-19, 25-10. Weiss had eight kills, seven digs and served 7-for-8 with an ace in the win. Rettig was 11-for-12 serving with an ace and 16 digs, while Wiers had four kills, 11 digs and eight assists along with 10-for-10 serving with a pair of aces. Also for Willard, Slone had three kills and eight digs, while Teagan Schaffer was 8-for-9 serving with six digs and three blocks. Tallman had eight assists, while Slone had eight digs. Paige Adams added four kills and Mya Stephens had five assists. Willard then closed the day with a two-set loss to Fremont Ross (8-0). Weiss was 15-for-15 serving with five aces, and also had four kills and six digs. Slone was 7-for-7 serving and had four kills and 10 digs, while Wiers had 11 digs and five assists. Rettig was 6-for-6 serving and had six digs, followed by Schaffer with three kills and Tallman with three assists. "We saw some good competition today and learned some things we need to work on," Willard head coach Ashley Bond said. "It was a day to put behind us and learn from, as far as lack of intensity and effort. "I didn't have them ready to play. We will regroup and get right back at it on Tuesday." Both Norwalk and Willard have road Firelands Conference matches Tuesday night. The Truckers head to New London (3-2), while the Flashes visit South Central (3-4). S. Central 2, Lucas 0 Hillsdale 2, S. Central 0 LUCAS — The Trojans topped the host Cubs in two sets then nearly forced a third set against the Falcons in a pair of non-league matches on Aug. 30. South Central beat Lucas (0-9) with scores of 25-17, 25-17. They fell to the Falcons (4-3) by scores of 25-16, 25-23. BOYS SOCCER Clear Fork 2, Norwalk 0 NORWALK — The Truckers allowed one goal in each half and were kept off the scoreboard by the Colts in a non-league loss on Aug. 30 at Contractors Stadium. Norwalk fell to 2-3 overall with the loss ahead of Wednesday's Sandusky Bay Conference match at 7 p.m. against Vermilion. BOYS GOLF St. Paul compete in Bellevue Invite OXFORD TWP. — The Flyers shot a 426 in the Bellevue Invitational held on Aug. 30 at Wousickett golf course. Mason Beatty shot an 81 for the Flyers, while teammate Connor Polachek was close behind with an 87. Also for St. Paul, Everett Beal shot a 118 and Jacob Penwell had a 140. Findlay 173, Norwalk 184 NORWALK — Emytt Graffice tallied a 42, but the Truckers came up short against Findlay in a home non-league match on Aug. 28 at Eagle Creek. Jarrett Scheid added a 46 for Norwalk while Caleb Thompson, Avery Reitzel and Luke Metcalf each shot a 48.
