Rosecrans tops NL in new stadium

NEW LONDON — Playing in a brand new stadium, the host New London football team fell behind early and was unable to keep up with visiting Zanesville Bishop Rosecrans. The Bishops passed for 180 yards and three touchdowns in the 36-18 win on Aug. 29 in New London. Trailing 14-0 after one quarter, the Wildcats (1-1) got on the board when Gabe Ellis scored on a 9-yard pass from Jarrett Mencl on the second play of the second quarter. The run for two points failed, but NL was within 14-6. But Rosecrans (2-0) needed just four plays to go 60 yards, with a 51-yard TD pass at the 10:15 mark of the second quarter. The Bishops then needed six plays to move 56 yards, as a 21-yard TD pass extended the lead to 28-6 with 4:37 left in the half. In the third quarter, New London's Chase Cook recovered a fumble at the NL 9-yard line. But Rosecrans took it back and then some on the very next play. Titan Grandstaff intercepted a Mencl pass and returned it nine yards for a defensive touchdown and a 36-6 lead at the 9:51 mark of the third quarter. New London needed just three plays to go 64 yards late in the third when Mencl found Jackson Mitchell for a 41-yard TD pass with 6:13 left in the third. Trailing 36-12, Mitchell then caught a 25-yard TD pass with 6:34 left in the game. Mencl was 13-of-26 passing for 162 yards and the three TD passes for New London. Mitchell caught four passes for 91 yards with 2 TDs and also completed a 34-yard pass. Landon Harrison caught four passes for 61 yards and Ellis had four catches for 32 yards and a TD. Hunter Chandley added 24 yards rushing and caught a 13-yard pass. New London hosts Vanlue next on Sept. 5 to wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule.
