Willard park gets major upgrades

WILLARD — Families visiting Willard City Park will notice new improvements this summer. Several upgrades at the park, located at 541 S. Main St., were recently finalized thanks to a partnership between Huron County Public Health's Creating Healthy Communities program and the City of Willard. A new slide has been installed and fresh mulch spread at the park as part of the effort to expand safe and active play opportunities for children. The projects were funded through Creating Healthy Communities funding; according to the agency, the upgrades cost approximately $14,000. The Huron County Creating Healthy Communities (CHC) grant helps the local health department make it easier for residents to live healthier lives. Funded through the Ohio Department of Health, the grant supports projects like community gardens, better access to healthy foods, and more opportunities for physical activity. Local schools, businesses, and groups work together with the county to put these ideas into action, according to the agency. "We would like to thank Kim Williams, who helped make this project possible, along with the City of Willard," Sydney Raifsnider, program coordinator for Huron County Creating Healthy Communities, said. "They have done an amazing job making improvements to the city and aligning their values with (the program's) mission to increase opportunities for active living in our community." The latest work is one of several initiatives underway, according to Raifsnider. Other projects include: • The Kiddie Land project at Willard City Park is expected to be completed and open by mid-September. Once finished, the redesigned space will feature two play areas — one designed for children ages 2-5 and another for ages 5-12. Both areas will include inclusive play equipment to accommodate children of all abilities. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be announced closer to opening. • In addition, work continues on the revitalization project at Woodbine Park, 615 Woodbine Ave. in Willard, which will extend into 2026. Planned additions include a swing set, picnic table, merry-go-round and climber. More updates will follow as projects progress, according to Raifsnider.
