Norwalk soccer sweeps Port Clinton

The Norwalk High School girls and boys soccer teams opened Sandusky Bay Conference play Monday with a pair of wins over Port Clinton at Contractors Stadium. The girls improved to 3-1 on the season with a 3-1 win over the Redskins in the second of the two matches at the Warren Whitney Athletic Complex. Claire Spettle and Taryn Temple each scored off penalty kicks, while CJ Bennett scored the third goal off an assist from Kira Sandor. At goalkeeper, Becca Farmer made five saves. The NHS boys team claimed a 4-0 win to improve to 1-2 on the young season. Abe Linder picked up his first win at goalkeeper with the shutout win over the Redskins (1-2). The Truckers scored twice in each half. Frankie Dolce scored off an assist from Landon Ferkel, then Ferkel scored off an assist from Cruz Santiago to make it 2-0. Johan Ramos then scored on a deep shot off an assist from Kingston Gonzales, and Elliot Gahring scored unassisted on a break away attempt to close out the scoring. Both teams will host Sandusky, beginning with the girls match, at 5 p.m. Wednesday back at Contractors Stadium. Woodmore 6, Edison 1 MILAN — Kellyn Ritchie scored the lone goal for the Chargers with 10 minutes remaining in the second half of Monday's SBC loss to the Wildcats. Edison (1-3, 1-1) is at Bellevue at 5 p.m. Wednesday. VOLLEYBALL Willard 3, Bellevue 2 WILLARD — The Crimson Flashes improved to 4-0 on the season with Monday's lengthy non-league win over visiting Bellevue. Willard fell behind 2-0 with losses of 25-20 and 25-21. It then won three straight sets to take the match, 25-21, 26-24 and 15-12. Camryn Wiers paced Willard at the net with 14 kills, while Natalie Slone and Leah Weiss each had 10 kills. Teagan Schaffer also had seven kills and five blocks, and Slone also had five blocks. Willard only missed six total serves in five sets, and finished with eight aces. Emelia Tallman finished 27-for-28 with two aces, while Wiers was 15-for-15 with three aces. Slone was 16-for-17 with an ace, and Weiss was 15-for-16 with an ace. At setter, Tallman had 15 assists, followed by Wiers with 11 and Mya Stephens with nine. Defensively, Alexis Rettig had 29 digs and Weiss had 21. Slone and Wiers each had 12 digs and Schaffer added nine. "Tonight was such a strange match," Willard head coach Ashley Bond said. "Credit to our girls for not folding being down 0-2. Our defense really stepped it up. The girls knew that Coach Jayla had worked them extremely hard this summer to be in condition for a fifth set. "Their conditioning, along with tremendous mental toughness, allowed them to pull it out. The crowd was great for us and they also deserve some credit in the win."
