Norwalk tennis places four at Port Clinton Doubles tournament

PORT CLINTON — The Norwalk girls tennis team placed in all four brackets Saturday at the deep Coffin-Greer Port Clinton Doubles tournament at the Hablitzel-Von Thron courts. The Truckers narrowly missed the third place trophy in a field that included strong programs, such as the host Redskins (95 points), Ottawa Hills (80) and Lima Shawnee (56). Norwalk scored 53 points for fourth place. At second doubles, juniors Alyssa Gruhlke and Aubrey Kluding placed second. They beat Clyde's Adriana Barnes-Ortmann and Delaney Fritz (10-1) and St. Mary Central Catholic's Lauren Maxwell and Caitlyn Collins (10-0) to reach the final, where they fell to Port Clinton's Shantha Weit and Megan Zgodzinski (10-1). The fourth doubles team of senior Roxy Brummit and sophomore Leksi Jurczuk took third. They beat Fostoria's Ameliana Haughawout and Aailyah Campos (10-0) before falling to Port Clintons Anastasia Hughes and Jayda Mullins (10-2). For third, they beat Shawnee's Jia Panchal and Norah Mulder (8-1). The first doubles pairing of juniors Lydia Trost and Addy Rospert took fourth. They opened with a 10-3 win over Bellevue's Emerson Snyder and Natalie Littlejohn, then were edged by Clyde's Kenzie Guhn and Ariah Farrar (10-8). For third place, they also lost a narrow match to Port Clinton's Grace Arnold and Nora Pixler (8-6). The third doubles team of senior Chloe Hazelwood and Riley Helton also went 2-1. They lost a close match to Port Clinton's Jaelynn Mazur and Lilly Hatt (10-8) before rebounding for two wins to place fifth. They beat Bellevue's Aubrea Branco and Leeah Hinojosa (8-6) and Clyde's Sophia Ruffing and Danika Harvey (8-3). Norwalk visits Clyde on Monday; Perkins on Tuesday; and Columbian on Thursday in SBC Lake matches this week. VOLLEYBALL Monroeville splits tri-match MONROEVILLE — The Eagles defeated nearby Edison in four sets before falling to Mohawk in five sets in a pair of non-league matches Saturday inside the Monroeville Athletic Complex. Monroeville (2-1) beat Edison with scores of 25-12, 25-19, and 25-21. Mohawk topped the Eagles 16-25, 25-12, 19-25, 25-22 and 15-6. The Warriors also beat the Chargers (1-3) in three, 25-12, 25-13, 25-13. Against Edison, the Eagles' Madi Reiber had 16 kills, Ady Adams added nine kills and Alexa Adams finished with 12 digs, six kills and five aces. Addison Homan had 28 digs, Addison Lyons finished with 17 assists and eight digs, while Kaci Poths had 15 assists and nine digs. Madi Miller also had nine digs. In the loss to Mohawk, Ady Adams had 13 kills, while Reiber had 11 kills and eight digs and Alexa Adams finished with eight killds and 13 digs. Homan led the back row with 33 digs, and Miller had 16 digs and three aces. Lyons added 19 assists and nine digs and Gabby Loose had six kills. For Edison, Macari Harris ended the day with 11 kills, while Dana Preston added 10 kills and six digs. Taylor Moore led the defense with 31 digs, and Peyton Bissell had 19 assists. Also for Edison, Paige McFadden added 12 assists, Ella Booth had 10 digs and six kills, and Stella Brown totaled nine digs. Ashland 3, S. Central 1 ASHLAND — The Trojans were unable to force a fifth set in a non-league loss to the host Arrows Saturday. Ashland won with scores of 20-25, 25-22, 25-21 and 25-14 to drop South Central to 2-1. Kaili Ingram and Autumn Fry each had nine kills for the Trojans, while Fry also had five blocks and Ingram had five digs. Zaida Myers had 10 kills and six digs, while Taylor Smith had 26 digs and served 10-for-11 with an ace. GIRLS SOCCER Madison 2, Norwalk 1 MADISON TWP. — The Rams broke a 1-1 tie in the final two minutes with a goal to slip past the Truckers in a non-league match Saturday afternoon. Claire Spettle scored Norwalk's goal on a breakaway near the front of the net. Becca Farmer had nine saves in goal. Norwalk (2-1) opens its defense of the Sandusky Bay Conference title Monday against Port Clinton. BOYS SOCCER Madison 4, Norwalk 0 MANSFIELD — The Truckers trailed 2-0 at halftime in the non-league loss. Abe Linder recorded 10 saves for Norwalk (0-2), which hosts Port Clinton Monday. BOYS GOLF NL competes in Madison Invite GALION — The Wildcats shot a 355 on Friday to finish 11th among 15 teams at the Mansfield Madison Invitational, which was played on Valley View golf course. Brody Sword continued to lead New London with a 78. Both Grady Heileman and Kade Detterman shot a 90, while Logan Sword had a 97. Also for the Wildcats, Presley Ferguson totaled a 99 and Easton Ball had a 105. New London will host St. Paul on Monday in a Firelands Conference match at Millstone Hills.
