A Pleasant first day

NORWALK — Excitement filled the halls of Pleasant Elementary School on Thursday morning as students returned for the first day of the new school year. Staff decorated the building with a "Camp Pleasant" theme, complete with camp-style signs, cheerful banners and classrooms designed to look like cabins, setting a fun and welcoming tone for the year ahead. Students began the day with a hearty breakfast in the cafeteria before heading to their new classrooms. Teachers greeted families at the door, while principal Janice Smith, retiring at the end of the school year, shared hugs and the bittersweet news with families. "The first day of school has always been one of my favorite days. It's a fresh start filled with excitement, hope, and endless possibilities. This year is especially meaningful, as it is my last 'first day' as principal of Pleasant Elementary," she said. "I am deeply grateful for the students, staff, families, and community who have made these years such a joy. Pleasant will always hold a special place in my heart, and I look forward to making this final year one we will never forget — together." Many children were happy to be back with friends and teachers. "I missed seeing everyone this summer," a third-grader said. "It feels good to be back." A fourth-grade boy added, "I like school because I get to learn new things, but also because we get recess again with my friends." Not all observations were serious. With a grin, a second-grader whined, "The first day is great, but I think my backpack got heavier on summer break." As the "campers" settled into their first lessons, teachers said they hope the theme will carry throughout the year, reminding students that school can be both educational and fun.
