New London schools update

Superintendent Brad Romano gave the board of education a look on Monday at the recently enacted state budget and how it will affect the school district. As part of his presentation, he pointed out some of the issues the governor vetoed and said the legislature has until the end of the year to try to overturn them. The food bank, which is located in the front of the former bakery building, recently had a soft opening for residents of Windy Acres, and Romano said it went well and the customers were very appreciative. Most of the food will be provided by Second Harvest, and the food bank will be open to the public from 1:30-3 p.m. each Friday. He concluded by saying additional parking is planned for the new fieldhouse, and the building should be ready by the end of October. In personnel matters, the board accepted the resignations of bus driver Amanda Swords, intervention specialist Elizabeth Harris and cleaner/custodian Cody Elliot. Gretchen Brownell was hired as a paraprofessional, Linda Dye as a cleaner/custodian, Karen Stewart as a kitchen worker and Jason Griffits as a varsity wrestling coach. The board passed a list of new policies and revisions on first reading and approved actions such as bus routes, drivers and handbooks. Members also okayed an agreement with the village for a member of the New London Police Department to serve as the School Resource Officer. Several donations were approved, including $1,000 from the American Legion for the FFA and $16,765 from the Athletic Boosters for the track.
