Norwalk tennis fourth at host Doubles Invite

NORWALK — The Norwalk girls tennis team placed fourth at its host Doubles Invitational on Saturday at the Middle School courts. Sylvania Northview won the team title, followed by Ashland in second and Amherst in third. The Truckers placed in all four brackets, led by the third doubles team of sophomore Leksi Jurczuk and senior Chloe Hazelwood in second place. The pair opened with a win over Shelby (6-4, 6-1) before outlasting Amherst in a three-set match that took more than 2.5 hours in the excessive heat. Those scores were 6-4, 6-7 (4) and 10-5. In the finals, the pair were swept by Ashland (6-0, 6-0). At second doubles, juniors Alyssa Gruhlke and Aubrey Kluding bounced back from a first-round loss vs. Ashland, 6-0, 7-6 (2) to win twice and place fifth. They beat Edison (8-2) and Findlay (8-3). The fourth doubles team of senior Roxy Brummit and junior Riley Helton also lost a long match in the heat to Findlay (2-6, 6-3, 10-8) before also rebounding with a pair of wins to earn fifth. They beat Shelby (8-0) and Ashland (8-6). The first doubles team of juniors Lydia Trost and Addy Rospert also had a long opening match against St. Mary Central Catholic in a three-set loss (3-6, 6-2, 11-9). They then fell to Ashland, 8-3. Northview 3, Norwalk 2 NORWALK — The Truckers lost both doubles matches to fall to 1-3 overall on Friday. Rospert defeated Kendall Newsome (6-0, 6-1) at second singles and Jurczuk topped Isabelle Forquer at third singles (6-0, 6-2). Northview's Reese Lambert beat Trost (6-1, 6-2) at first singles. At first doubles, Northview's Macy Pogan and Marissa Morgan defeated Gruhlke and Kluding (6-1, 6-3). The second doubles team of Brielle Bentley and Abby Caryer avoided a third set against Helton and Brummit, 6-3, 7-6 (1). Hazelwood won a singles match over Macy Wamsher (6-0, 7-5). The Truckers have a busy week ahead. They host Willard on Monday, then head to Clyde on Tuesday before hosting Ashland Wednesday and visiting Sandusky Thursday. Norwalk closes out its week at the Port Clinton Doubles Invitational Saturday (Aug. 23). BOYS GOLF Willard wins Bay shootout VERMILION — Willard shot a 155 to win a Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division shootout Friday at Willow Creek. The Crimson Flashes finished with a 155, outdistancing runner-up Margaretta by nine strokes. Willard's Mason Dawson was the medalist with a 35. Also scoring for the Flashes was Adler Ames (38), Kaleb Weaver (41) and Harrison Meisner (41). Isaac Frye also had a 44 and Jaxson Hall shot a 45 for Willard. Vermilion was third at 169, followed by Huron (176), Edison (179) and Port Clinton (213). Hayden Lewis led Edison with a 41. Mason Hermes shot 45, followed by Owen Price (46), Brooks Ballah (47), Tyler Pounds (47) and Weston Gfell (48). New London 166, B. Central 181 NEW WASHINGTON — Brody Sword shot a 2-over 37 to lead New London to a 15-shot road victory Friday at Cranberry Hills Golf Course. Also scoring for the Wildcats was Kade Detterman (42), Grady Heilman (43) and Logan Sword (44). Presley Ferguson added a 47 and Olivia Yetter shot a 50. New London hosts Plymouth on Monday back at Millstone Hills. Truckers 13th at Weiss ASHLAND — The Truckers competed in the Weiss Invitational on Aug. 14 at Brookside Golf Course. Emytt Graffice paced Norwalk with a 94, while Jeff Scheid had a 97. Luke Metcalf added a 97, and was followed by Cohen Shoop (101) and Caleb Thompson (114). GIRLS GOLF Norwalk second at Tiffin invite TIFFIN — Adyson Lepley fired a 93, leading the Truckers to a second-place finish at the Tiffin Columbian Invitational Friday at Clinton Heights Golf Course. Anthony Wayne won the event with a team total of 340. Norwalk was second with a 380 while Bellevue (390) was third. Emerson Ulrey added a 94 for Norwalk. Catherine Beamer carded a 95, followed by Evelyn Welschenbach (98) and Allison Konik (122). "To finish second and have three girls play their best round all in the same day is so special," Norwalk head coach Kate Brutcher said. "They really kept their composure all the way through the round. The first two weeks of the season has been very grueling with the extreme heat and the loaded schedule. "They continue to improve each time they play, making corrections, honing their skills, and ultimately playing better and having some fun along the way." Reese Bedingfield led Willard, which had three total golfers and didn't qualify for a team score, with a 94. GIRLS SOCCER Crestview 1, Edison 0 OLIVESBURG — The Chargers fell on a single goal by the host Cougars after a free kick with six minutes remaining in Saturday's non-league season opener. Ella Rogers made five saves for Edison, which hosts Eastwood on Monday.
