Tornado touched down in New London

NEW LONDON — A small tornado caused some damage in New London Wednesday morning. The storm touched down at about 2:04 a.m. and traveled about a third of a mile before dissipating about one minute later, according to data from the National Weather Service. In its short flight, the tornado toppled a baseball diamond's bullpen and downed trees, power lines and damaged homes. Storm speeds The tornado had an estimated 50-yard width with wind speeds of approximately 90 miles per hour, according to the weather service. It was classified as an EF-1, the second-lowest on the six-tier scale of tornado classification. Path of damage Information provided by the weather service details the storm's destructive path: • "The initial damage occurred at the New London Recreation Area near the small baseball field, where the storm blew over one of the bullpens." • "The tornado then tracked northeast, snapping a large hardwood tree in Grove Street Cemetery, with maximum wind speeds estimated at 90 mph. Several other large tree limbs in the cemetery were also broken." • "Continuing into the residential area of New London, the tornado snapped and brought down several large tree tops and limbs, damaging two homes. Residents reported their ears popping and their homes shaking during the event." • "Further along its path, the tornado uprooted a large hardwood tree and landed it on a home. The home suffered roof damage from the fallen tree." • "Another uprooted tree fell onto power lines, snapping three utility poles and blocking the roadway. Before dissipating, the tornado also knocked down several panel fences."
