Norwalk tennis opens Lake with sweep

BELLEVUE — The Norwalk girls tennis team opened SBC Lake play Monday with a 5-0 road sweep over host Bellevue. At first singles, Lydia Trost avoided a third set with Natalie Littlejohn with a 6-2, 7-6 (9) win. At second singles, Addy Rospert defeated Emerson Snyder (6-4, 6-3), while Leksi Jurczuk beat Aubrea Branco at third singles (6-1, 6-0). Norwalk's first doubles team of Alyssa Gruhlke and Aubrey Kluding defeated Allison Lee and Lanei Williams (6-0, 6-1). At second doubles, Roxy Brummit and Riley Helton topped Makayla Ortmann and Natalie Ocreto (6-0, 6-4). Junior varsity winners included Abby Upton (6-1), Chloe Hazelwood and Brooklyn Younce (6-0), Vanessa Vazquez and Libby Lark (6-0), Lily Ware and Ella Borgeson (6-1), Grace Knight and Natalie Wiegel (6-0) and Scarlet Schneider and Emmie Leber (6-0). St. Ursula 5, Norwalk 0 NORWALK — The Truckers returned to the courts Tuesday and took a non-league loss to the Division I Arrows at the Middle School. Taylor Kayse beat Trost at first singles (6-0, 6-0), while Paige Schlageter topped Rospert at second singles (6-3, 6-0). Marybell Mawad defeated Jurczuk (6-1, 6-0) at third singles. Gruhlke and Kluding fell to Rose DiSalie and Sophia Oswald (6-3, 6-1) at first doubles, while Brummit and Helton fell to Brie Traxler and Kieran Davis at second doubles (6-2, 6-2). In JV matches, Hazelwood and Younce split two matches (8-2, 6-8). Upton teamed with Vazquez for an 8-1 win and also won a singles match, 8-7. Other JV winners included Nellie Ferguson and Lark twice (8-1, 8-6); Ware and Knight (8-2); Wiegel and Borgeson (8-0); Schneider and Leber (8-0); Lily McDuffie and Natalie Morales (8-5); and Mily Gatschet and Wiegel (8-4). Other JV matches incluuded Norah Whaley and Carsyn Swick (3-8), Evelyn Harris and Keelie Cammarn (4-8), and Valerie Samano and Genevieve Riley (3-8). The Truckers (1-2) get tested by another Div. I power on Friday when they host Sylvania Northview before their annual Doubles Invitational on Saturday. Vermilion 3, Edison 2 VERMILION — The Sailors opened their season with a win over Edison Monday. The Chargers won at first singles, as Liz Campbell swept Alexa Guitar (6-0, 6-0). Also for Edison, Jenna Keoghan won over Lily Fisher (6-0, 6-1). Vermilion won at third singles by forfeit, then the first doubles team of Cora Frederick and Ava Leslie beat Scarlett Bennett and Faith Maschari (6-0, 6-1). At second doubles, Megan Wade and Colleen Trout beat Ilah Reynolds and Elly Butler (6-0, 6-1). GIRLS GOLF St. Paul 286, Margaretta 288 NORWALK — The Flyers improved to 6-0 on the young season with Monday's nine-hole non-league win over the Polar Bears at Eagle Creek. Alia Bogard paced St. Paul with a 50, while Aubrey Dilger was next with a 52. Jillian Weilnau and Annabelle Cooper each had 61s and Ava Englert added a 62. Huron 212, St. Paul 224 NORWALK — The Flyers fell to 6-1 with Tuesday's non-league loss to the visiting Tigers back at Eagle Creek. St. Paul was led by Alia Bogard's 52. It also got a 54 from Dilger and a 55 from Weilnau in the loss. Englert rounded out the scoring with a 63. BOYS GOLF New London sweeps tri NEW LONDON — The Wildcats improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Firelands Conference with Tuesday's victories over Crestview and Colonel Crawford. New London shot a 171, just ahead of Crawford (175) and Crestview (177). Brody Sword paced the Wildcats with a 35. He was followed by Grady Heileman (44), Logan Sword (45) and Kade Detterman (47).Presley Ferguson added a 51 and Olivia Yetter shot a 55. New London will travel to Buckeye Central on Friday.
