Kids' Day at the fair

NORWALK — Heat and humidity did little to dampen spirits Tuesday at the Huron County Fair with attendees enjoying Kids' Day, with free admission until 3 p.m. Children were able to take part in numerous activities sponsored by local businesses, nonprofits and government agencies, including coloring activities and games. A "kiddie tractor pull" took place at noon. At least one attendee the newspaper spoke with was enjoying his day, and a little brand loyalty. "I like coming here and seeing all the animals," said Joseph, a six-year-old boy coloring butterflies in the expo center. "But the tractors are really cool too, I get to see them after this. "I'm a John Deere guy," he added. A Huron County commission meeting was hosted in Veterans' Pavilion at 9 a.m. Commissioners shared fair experiences and hosted what could be described as a "State of the County" event within the meeting, getting reports from several elected officials and city department heads. Kellie Deeter, R-Norwalk • County emergency management agency director Art Mead • Josh Jasinski of the county dog warden's office • Scott Sparks, of the Norwalk-Huron County airport board • Mircea Handru, interim director of the county mental health and addiction services board • Bob Morgan, Huron County Fair Board • Steve Minor, building and grounds supervisor • Leona Minor, of the county's Job and Family Services office Events hosted, more planned Events and judging carried on throughout the day, including shows for turkey, dairy beef, swine and poultry, a square dance and more. Those attending the fair on Wednesday can look forward to more judging and shows, including: • 9 a.m., market hog show • 9 a.m., interview judging begins • 9 a.m., saddle horse showmanship, located in the Weisenberger Arena after showmanship horse discipline classes, also in the Weisenberger Arena • 10 a.m., dairy Skillathon, in the Show Arena • 1 p.m., All About Dogs interview judging, in the Miscellaneous Building • 1 p.m., Family & Consumer Science Miscellaneous Awards Presentation, located in the FCS Building • 1 p.m., Dairy Judging Contest • 3 p.m., beef show (beef breeding, beef feeders & beef steers/heifers - showmanship & classes) The Huron County Fair runs from Aug. 11-16.
