Fair royalty crowned

NORWALK — Jenna Shepherd and Caleb Martin were selected as the Huron County Junior Fair queen and king Monday night. The event was hosted inside the Pickworth building on the first night of the weeklong fair. Shepherd was second attendant on last year's court to queen Anessa Ruggles. She is the daughter of Amanda Cooper and Brian Shepherd and will be a senior at South Central High School. According to the contest program, Shepherd is a current member of the South Central FFA and is currently the vice president of the Junior Fair board, as well as the FFA Chapter secretary. Shepherd is showing an Adirondack chair she made this week at the fair. She also does volleyball and powerlifting for the Trojans and is also a Teen Leadership and SADD member. Shepherd is also enrolled in North Central State College courses, and plans to graduate high school with an associate's degree in social work. Her future plans include an interest in becoming a child services case manager. Martin, the son of Justin and Sarah Martin, is a senior at Bellevue High School. He is a member of the Lyme Producers 4-H Club and Bellevue FFA. His fair exhibits this year include chickens, hogs and woodworking. Martin has attended leadership conferences and received awards in both 4-H and FFA. At Bellevue, his activities include clubs, leadership, performing arts and sports. Earning first and second attendants to Shepherd among 13 total candidates Monday night was Chloe Hazelwood and Lilly Stein. Hazelwood is the daughter of Mark and Megan Hazelwood and will be a senior at St. Paul High School. Hazelwood is also on the junior fair board and is the president of the Super Clovers 4-H Club. Her projects at this week's fair include floriculture, furniture refinishing, mentoring, Ag Careers, rabbit breeding, scrapbooking, sewing, quilting and woodworking. She is active in several extracurriculars, including mock trial, marching band, tennis, sideline cheer, competition cheer, academic challenge, and high school musicals. She has been in three teen productions at Near West Theatre in Cleveland. Hazelwood would like to pursue a career in ecology or law. Stein is the daughter of Keith and Amanda Stein and will be a junior at Monroeville High School. As a member of the Monroeville FFA and Fortune Finders 4-H Club, Stein's fair entries this week include goats, turkey, dairy feeder calf and lambs. She also has entries in sewing and scrapbooking. Stein is involved in several school activities, which include cross country, basketball and track and field. She also volunteers with several youth programs. Stein's future plans include working on a State FFA degree, an American degree, and attending college to study the field of radiology or something in agriculture. All 14 contestants also received a $100 scholarship, courtesy of a donation by Case Farms.
