Edison's Wittmer is Div. V Player of the Year

Two standouts who anchored an impressive season by the Edison baseball team were recognized among the top players in the state on June 9. Edison junior outfielder and pitcher Bryson Wittmer was selected as the Division V Player of the Year as part of the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association's All-Ohio teams. Wittmer was joined on the first team by his senior teammate and ace pitcher Abe Hermes. A University of Louisville commit since January 2023, Wittmer batted leadoff for the Chargers this past spring. He was 40-for-90 (.444) at the plate with two doubles, two triples and six home runs. Wittmer had 23 RBIs and scored 40 runs in 27 games. He also walked 17 times and stole 16 bases. When he wasn't playing centerfield, Wittmer made six starts on the mound. He finished 4-1 with a 2.55 earned run average. Wittmer allowed 13 earned runs on eight hits with 83 strikeouts and 35 walks in 35 2/3 innings of work. Meanwhile, Hermes led Edison on the mound this season. The Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division's Most Outstanding Performer, Hermes was 10-1 with a 0.98 ERA this season. An Ohio University recruit for wrestling, Hermes appeared in 13 games with eight starts. He threw six complete games, including fur shutouts, and also recorded one save in relief. Hermes allowed 24 runs (10 earned) on 45 hits with 123 strikeouts and 22 walks in 71 1/3 innings. Edison finished 23-4 overall and 10-0 in the Bay Division this season. The Chargers won league and sectional titles, and finished with a No. 3 ranking in the final state coaches poll. In Div. VII, South Central junior starting pitcher Wes June earned a spot on the All-Ohio second team. June finished with a 9-1 record and a 1.79 ERA for the Trojans this past season. He went the distance in nine of his starts with two shutouts. He allowed 28 runs (19 earned) on 55 hits with 50 strikeouts and six walks in 58 1/3 innings. June helped the Trojans to a 16-11 overall record and 11-3 in the Firelands Conference. South Central won the FC title and reached a district championship game.
