Monroeville's Tyler is All-Ohio first team

Five area players earned recognition on the Ohio High School Fastpitch Coaches Association's All-Ohio teams, which were announced on June 9. Four players from a pair of Firelands Conference rivals that met three times as the top two seeds in their respective district earned All-Ohio in Division VII. Monroeville senior second baseman Taryn Tyler headlined those selections on the first team. Tyler batted .561 with 19 doubles, two triples and two home runs. She had 55 RBIs and also scored 55 runs. In helping the Eagles (27-4) reach the state championship game for a second straight season, Tyler will also enter the unofficial OHSAA state record book for hits (60) and RBIs (55) in a season, as well as hits (183) and RBIs (161) in a career. Senior ace pitcher Veanna Helmstetter was a second team choice. She finished 23-2 in the circle for Monroeville, which also finished with a No. 8 ranking in the final state poll. Helmstetter had a 1.63 earned run average and struck out 166 batters with 27 walks in 141 2/3 innings of work. For St. Paul (13-12), which finished district runners-up to the Eagles on May 24, sophomore catcher Ella Kalizewski earned a spot on the second team at catcher. She hit .547 with eight doubles, three triples, nine home runs and 40 RBIs. Also for the Flyers, junior outfielder Bella Guerra earned honorable mention after she batted .415 with four doubles, three triples, three home runs, 14 RBIs and 34 runs. In Div. V, Edison (20-7) junior first baseman Peyton Taylor also earned a spot on the honorable mention list. Taylor batted .537 with 15 doubles, three triples, four home runs and 53 RBIs for the Chargers, who won 20 games and the SBC Bay title this past spring.
