Street levy needed?

NEW LONDON — Suggestions of a possible levy, talks on park use and new ordinances were discussed during the most recent New London village council meeting. Here's a roundup of what occurred: Street repairs needed In his report to council Monday, village administrator Shawn Pickworth said the village has no money for street repairs and asked members to consider a levy because, "We have to have money to repair our streets." He added that water meter changes continue, and a fence will be erected around the Water Treatment Plant later this month. Also, the village will be looking at its property insurance because replacement costs are rising. Zoning commission At the last regular meeting council accepted the zoning commission vote against changing 118 E. Main and 26 E. Washburn to R3-Multi-Family Residential Use Districts. Since then, changes have been made to the E. Main plans, and a new proposal will be submitted to the Zoning Commission. Parks discussion Park superintendent Joe Thomas asked members if they would consider raising seasonal rates for full hookups at the Reservoir Campground by $400 to $2,700 next year, and the response was positive. He outlined some of the improvements he would like to see made in the future, including a splash pad, a remodeled shower house, pickleball courts and a new office. Fire chief's report In a written report, fire Chief John Chapin said his department received $4,625 from the Hospital Proceeds Board, and it will be used to purchase 12 pair of fire boots. The Spill on the Hill is scheduled for July 20. Ordinances, resignation and more Council took action on several routine ordinances, one adjusting employee pay ranges and rates and another renewing police and fire dispatch service with the county sheriff. Members also accepted the resignation of long-time solicitor Steve Bond, effective June 30. Firelands Ambulance Service went on 76 runs in May, and the spring cleanup resulted in the collection of 62 tons of trash.
