Seven named to OHSFSCA district first team

The Ohio High School Fastpitch Coaches Association released its Northwest District teams to the media on June 9. A total of seven area players were recognized with first team honors across four of the seven divisions. That included five players in Division VII from a pair of Firelands Conference rivals that met three times this season. The Monroeville senior trio of pitcher Veanna Helmstetter, catcher Avery Rosser and second baseman Taryn Tyler were first team choices for the Eagles (27-4), who reached the state championship game for a second straight year. Helmstetter finished 23-2 in the circle for Monroeville, which also finished with a No. 8 ranking in the final state poll. She had a 1.63 earned run average and struck out 166 batters with 27 walks in 141 2/3 innings of work. Rosser hit .490 with eight doubles and 32 RBIs. Tyler batted .561 with 19 doubles, two triples and two home runs. She had 55 RBIs and also scored 55 runs. For St. Paul (13-12), which finished district runners-up to the Eagles on May 24, sophomore catcher Ella Kalizewski joined Rosser as a first team catcher. She hit .547 with eight doubles, three triples, nine home runs and 40 RBIs. Also for the Flyers, junior outfielder Bella Guerra earned first team after she batted .415 with four doubles, three triples, three home runs, 14 RBIs and 34 runs scored. Earning second team in Div. VII was St. Paul freshman third baseman Ryleigh Mansfield-Bush (.494, four doubles, 16 RBIs), and South Central freshmen outfielders Novaleigh Myers (.394, eight RBIs) and Viola Culler (.414, eight doubles, 20 RBIs). Monroeville junior third baseman Madi Reiber and sophomore shortstop Payton Weilnau were both honorable mention selections. Reiber hit .429 and had 13 doubles, five triples, four home runs, and drove in 32. Weilnau batted .429 with six doubles, five triples and 26 RBIs. In Div. V, Edison junior first baseman Peyton Taylor also earned a spot on the first team. She batted .537 with 15 doubles, three triples, four home runs and 53 RBIs for the Chargers, who won 20 games and the SBC Bay title this past spring. Earning honorable mention were her Edison teammates, sophomore pitcher Abby Cloud (16-4, 3.30 ERA) and sophomore left fielder Natalie Desautels (.516, 30 RBIs). Willard (3-19) had a pair of infield honorable mention selections in senior Lauren Hamons and junior Natalie Slone. Hamons batted .422 with nine doubles, three home runs and 21 RBIs, while Slone hit .586 with five doubles, three triples and one home run. In Div. III, a pair of Norwalk seniors were recognized. Outfielder Mya Prochnow was voted to the second team, while first baseman Lilly Farmer was honorable mention. Prochnow batted .495 with seven doubles, seven home runs, 30 RBIs and 29 runs scored. Farmer hit .392 with three doubles, one home run, 18 RBIs and 19 runs scored as the Truckers (13-12) won a district game for the first time in program history. For New London (17-10), senior catcher Madison Rowland was a first team selection in Div. VI. She hit .452 with eight doubles, five home runs and 17 RBIs. Earning second team was junior first baseman Gracie Thomas (.435, seven doubles, eight home runs, 44 Rbis) and junior outfielder Pailee Wilson (.444, four doubles, three home runs, 25 RBIs).
