Five players earn District 9 first team

Five area players earned a spot on the first team in their respective division on the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association District 9 teams, which were released on May 20. Three players from Firelands Conference programs were on the first team in Division VII, including South Central junior pitcher Wes June. June was 9-1 with a 1.79 earned run average this season with 49 strikeouts and just six walks. He also batted .359 with eight doubles and 18 RBIs. Plymouth's Lex Grose was also first team after he hit hit .432 with 11 doubles, two home runs and 39 RBIs. St. Paul junior infielder Landon Fries batted .356 with four doubles, one triple and 20 RBIs for the Flyers (13-11, 8-6) to also earn first team. Second team honors went to South Central senior shortstop Aaron Hauler (.338, five doubles, one home run, 12 RBIs); Plymouth junior pitcher Jarrett Burrer (6-3, 2.41 ERA); and St. Paul freshman pitcher Alex Marsh (8-2, 1.32 ERA). Earning honorable mention in Div. VII was St. Paul's Jacob Zuccaro and Gabe Snyder; Plymouth's Lincoln Distl and Keegan Beverly; and South Central's Troy Ayers and Bryan Chaffee. Mohawk's Hunter Haynes (6-1, 2.17 ERA, .442 average) earned Player of the Year, and Calvert's Matt Coleman was Coach of the Year. A pair of Edison standouts were first team in Div. V in senior pitcher Abe Hermes and junior Bryson Wittmer. Through the regular season, Hermes was 9-0 on the mound with a 0.83 ERA. He struck out 104 batters with 22 walks in 59 1/3 innings. Wittmer was 5-0 record and a 2.55 ERA in 35 2/3 innings. He struck out 83 with 35 walks. At the plate, Wittmer entered the tournament batting .453 with two doubles, two triples, six home runs and 23 RBIs. Edison's Cole Leimeister (.377, three doubles, 15 RBIs) and Willard's Elijah Reed (4-5, 2.85 ERA .338 average) were both second team selections. Player of the Year in Div. V went to Oak Harbor's Brayden Butzin, who hit .481 with seven doubles, two triples, one home run and 31 RBIs. Edison head coach Sean Hoover earned Coach of the Year honors. Honorable mention concluded Edison's Davin Wendt and Chaz Smith; and Willard's Jandyel Salazar and Roger Whetstone. The Chargers finished 23-4 overall and 10-0 in the SBC Bay Division to win a fourth straight league title. They also finished with a No. 3 ranking in the final state coaches poll. In Div. VI, New London's Oliver Harrison (.419, six doubles, three triples, one home run, 15 RBIs) and Monroeville sophomore Colt Clark (xxx) were each second team selections. Honorable mention in Div. VI included Western Reserve's Connor Harmeling and Nolan Bryan; New London's Brody Sword and Joe Gum; and Monroeville's Reid Wasserman and Ethan Smiley. Riverdale's Evan Reiter was Player of the Year. He hit .581 with nine doubles and 13 RBIs. Hopewell-Loudon's Brock Bel was the Coach of the Year. In Divisions I-III, Norwalk junior Carter Harp was selected to the second team. Harp hit .324 with two doubles and scored 13 runs was a key reliever on the mound for the Truckers, where he was 1-1 with a 2.21 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 19 innings. Pitchers Wesley Shupe (junior) and Noah Helton (freshman) were both honorable mention. Third-year coach Jason Higgins earned Coach of the Year honors for Norwalk. After winning 15 gams combined in his first two seasons, the Truckers improved to 12-10 this season. Sandusky's Dennarius Walk was the Player of the Year.
