Convicted forger's sentencing hearing rescheduled

A convicted forger who failed to show up for his pre-sentence interview said Thursday he was "busy working.""I'm sorry I didn't make it. I didn't know it was a set date," Donald J. Knadler told Huron County Common Pleas Judge Jim Conway.Knadler, 23, of Columbus, pleaded guilty in March one count of forgery and also agreed to pay about $2,600 in restitution. As part of a plea deal, prosecutors dismissed a similar felony and agreed to recommend probation.But Knadler didn't appear for a court-ordered pre-sentence interview, which gives attorneys information about a defendant's criminal history.Conway said he's disappointed Knadler didn't come to the interview. The judge said he normally would have defendants in similar situations jailed, but added he doesn't want to disrupt Knadler's employment, which is a good step toward rehabilitation. Conway set up another pre-sentence interview and rescheduled Knadler's sentencing hearing for May 26. Knadler's forgery conviction is for a Nov. 13 incident. Huron County Assistant Prosecutor Eric Buchakjian has said the defendant entered two branches of Croghan Colonial Bank and attempted to cash two bad checks, which bank officials and the police determined weren't written by the affiliated business.Following the March 1 plea hearing, Conway released Knadler from the Huron County Jail on a personal recognizance bond. That means the defendant signed a court document in which he promised to appear for future hearings without paying money. Knadler had been unable to post a $5,000 bond with a 10-percent provision since Dec. 9. He is prohibited from being on the premises of any Croghan bank.Knadler could face prison time since he has a 2015 conviction for domestic violence. The man, who doesn't have any felony convictions, has said he is on probation for the misdemeanor.Knadler
