Sheriff's deputy resigns

NORWALK — A Huron County sheriff's deputy who recently pleaded guilty to a dereliction of duty charge resigned from his post. Deputy Shannon Lyons informed the department of his resignation on Tuesday afternoon, according to sheriff's office Chief Deputy Dave Ditz. Lyons, who is the cousin of Sheriff Todd Corbin, was fined and given a suspended 90-day jail term last Thursday in Norwalk Municipal Court on the dereliction charge. The charge appears to relate to an allegation that a weapon seized during a Huron County Sheriff's Office warrant search had gone missing after the search was completed. The Ashland County Sheriff's Office confirmed it conducted an administrative investigation of the missing evidence allegation but later stated it never completed it because Ditz asked it to stop investigating, an assertion confirmed in an Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation report. Ditz told the Reflector on Monday that his agency was conducting an internal investigation as a response to Lyons' guilty plea in the municipal court case. In the past, prior to becoming a deputy, Lyons was charged with domestic violence, theft, obstruction and disorderly conduct, according to records previously obtained from Sandusky and Perkins police.
