Bay champion Edison rolls to 17th win

PERKINS TWP. — Response was the key word. After going down in order in the fourth inning, Edison exploded for eight runs in the fifth, ending the game via run-rule. Freshman Jordyn Perry gave up single runs in the second and third innings, but responded with two scoreless innings to finish off the game. Perry, and 14 hits by the Chargers, helped Edison knock back Perkins 16-2 in Sandusky Bay Conference crossover action Saturday. It was the first career varsity win for Perry. She usually is watching on as Abby Cloud mows through the competition. "I know myself and I know I have good accuracy," Perry said. "I was very confident going in the circle. I want to be there when Abby is not there. I was glad I could show that." Perry surrendered two runs on seven hits. She walked just one and struck out three. "I have three pitchers and Jordyn has been on junior varsity, which has been scarce, this year," Edison coach Jason Caponi said. "She throws strikes and she throws three different pitches. She can throw them all around the zone." It didn't take long for the Chargers (17-5) to attack Perkins pitcher Caden McClellan. Natalie Desautels led off the game with a triple before scoring on a bunt single by Stella Brown. Brown stole second and scored on Peyton Taylor's run-scoring single. Edison added a run in the second when Peyton Bissell singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Desautels' single. The Chargers broke things open in the third inning. Brown reached on an error, getting all the way to third on the play. She scored on Taylor's single. Abby Cloud then reached on an error and after an out, Ivy Kluding reached on an error, scoring a run. Bissell and Delaney Fields each roped RBI doubles and Edison led 8-1. The Chargers put the game away in the top of the fifth. Lariah McMinn doubled before scoring on Kluding's double. Gracie Rang was hit by a pitch and another run scored when Bissell smacked her third hit of the day. Bissell scored three times and had two RBIs from the No. 8 spot in the lineup. "I felt like I needed to put the ball in play," Bissell said. "I think everybody thought that, too. We all can hit and mess things up a little bit. I think we're all pretty confident in ourselves up at the plate. We all know we can hit." Brown tattooed a two-run double later while Taylor and Navea Yamanouchi each added RBI singles. Perry was solid throughout in the circle for Edison. She gave up a run in the second via an error. Perkins (8-14) got a RBI double from McClellan in the third. Perry worked around some baserunners as the Pirates stranded runners on second and third in the first and third inning. In the fifth, Perry induced a first-pitch flyout to leave the bases loaded. "I don't really let the runners on base affect me," Perry said. "When there's a lot of runners, I just focus on the batter and I make sure I get that out of the way because that's what matters." Edison has a big week coming up. The Chargers face Port Clinton on Tuesday in a Division V sectional title game. Then, Edison goes for the outright Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division title Friday at Huron. A win by the Tigers would split the championship. "It's exciting. I wish things were timed a little bit differently," Caponi said. "We beat Port Clinton last night and they're a good team. We beat them twice, but beating a team three times? "I'm always worried about my opponent, no matter what. I worry the same way because anything can happen in this funny game."
