St. Paul blanks Eagles; Norwalk stays in first

NORWALK — The St. Paul baseball team got another strong outing from freshman Alex Marsh to keep pace in the Firelands Conference standings. Marsh threw another complete-game shutout, and the Flyers managed to score five runs on one hit in a 5-0 win over visiting Monroeville on Monday at Contractors Park. Marsh scattered four hits and struck out seven with one walk. He needed just 76 pitches (54 strikes) over the seven innings as the Flyers improved to 9-7 overall and 6-4 in the FC. They remain one game behind first-place South Central (9-7, 6-3). "Alex is doing a great job of attacking hitters," St. Paul head coach Aaron Fries said. "His confidence continues to grow with every time out. Defensively, we were confident and sharp. I thought there were a lot of difficult plays that we made look routine." In the bottom of the first, Jacob Zuccaro walked and stole second, then tagged up on a fly out — and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Landon Fries for a 1-0 lead. In the second, Adam Roth singled for the lone hit, then Brady Fritz and Isaac Kalizewski walked to load the bases with one out. Zuccaro then hit an RBI ground out to plate another run. In the fourth, an error and two walks again loaded the bases for St. Paul. Twin siblings Izaac and Gabe Snyder then each bases loaded walks to force in two more runs. "Offensively, we didn't get much going, but we were able to take advantage of some free passes and did a good job on the bases," Fries said. For Monroeville (8-7, 4-5), Reid Wasserman, Hudson Bauer, Tristan Wise and Jake Fries each singled. The two teams are scheduled to play again Tuesday at Clark Park in Monroeville. Norwalk (11-3, 6-1) trailed 2-1 before scoring one run each in the fifth and sixth innings. The Truckers are the away team, as the game was scheduled to be played at Sandusky, but Dorn Park's field was not playable. The game was then called with Norwalk runners at second and third base with two outs in the top of the seventh. Because six games were completed, the game is official. The Truckers got a run in the top of the first on a balk with Carter Harp standing on third base. In the fifth, Avery Scheel hit a sacrifice fly out to left that scored Harp to tie the game at 2-2. Norwalk again manufactured a run in the sixth when Wesley Shupe hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Brady Singer for the go-ahead run. Shupe went all six innings for the win. He allowed two earned runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. The Truckers host Perkins (12-5, 6-2) on Wednesday and visit Bellevue (9-5, 5-2) on Friday. They lead both teams by one game in the loss column. Norwalk 100 011 — 3 4 1 Sandusky 002 000 — 2 4 4 WP: Shupe; LP: Crawford 2B: (S) Walk Mapleton 5, W.
