South Central evens up FC race again

GREENWICH — Back to even. After losing in the final at-bat at St. Paul on April 24, the South Central baseball team came back with a 7-4 win over the Flyers on Monday. South Central (7-7, 5-3) and St. Paul (7-6, 5-3) are now back to tied atop the Firelands Conference standings. Both teams are joined by Plymouth (7-5, 4-3) and Monroeville (8-4, 4-3) for a four-way tie, while Western Reserve (5-5, 4-4) and Crestview (4-10, 3-4) are both one off the pace in the loss column. In Monday's win, the Trojans scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and made it stand. "We got off to a poor start that despite our best effort, we could not overcome," St. Paul head coach Aaron Fries said. "We have had games where we just cannot get out of our own way early, and this was another one of those games." Wes June was 2 for 2 with a double and drove in three of the seven runs, and earned the win on the mound in relief for the Trojans. He allowed one earned run on three hits with a strikeout and no walks in 1 1/3 innings. Bryan Chaffee was 2 for 4 and scored, while Alex Hamons sand Kayden Blair each singled with an RBI. Aaron Hauler went the first three innings of scoreless pitching and struck out six and walked one on three hits. For St. Paul, Landon Fries was 3 for 4 with a double and drove in two of the four runs. Gavin Thurston was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, while Jacob Zuccaro doubled and scored. The Trojans are set to face Monroeville at home on Tuesday and visit the Eagles Wednesday. St. Paul is slated to visit Plymouth and host the Big Red over the same two days. Noah Helton tripled with an RBI, while Landon Frekel singled and drove in a pair. Four different pitchers combined to allow five runs (four earned) on nine hits with six strikeouts and five walks. Wesley Shupe got the win for two innings of work. He struck out four and walked one without allowing a hit. He did not allow a run on one hit with 17 strikeouts and seven walks. At first singles, Jeremiah McCreary won for the Truckers in two sets (6-2, 6-0). Levi Dickerson won at third singles, 7-5, 7-6; and the second doubles team of Roman Snyder and Jack Pittenger claimed a two-set win (6-2, 6-0). At second singles, Evan Minor fell in two (6-3, 6-0) and the first doubles team of Eli Kluding and Edward Ramos Cruz also lost in two sets, 6-2, 6-3. Norwalk is scheduled to host Perkins in another league match on Tuesday.
