New London Schools board roundup

The board of education approved a Capital Improvement Plan Monday and took several steps to expand the plan by creating a Capital Improvement Fund and transferring $2 million into it from the general fund. Superintendent Brad Romano said by creating this fund, the board will be able to focus on capital projects, such as buildings, playground improvements, the heating/air conditioning system, transportation, technology and more. The new stadium, which is the latest capital improvement, is ready for a walk-through with Mosser Construction and is already being used for track meets. The proposed fieldhouse, a 75X130 masonry building, is the next capital project, and Romano said if it begins in the next couple ofweeks, it should be completed by October. The cost will be slightly under $2 million and Mosser Construction is the contractor. Romano said the district has applied for another five-year literacy grant, and work continues in Columbus on the biennial budget. He added until the budget is closer to finalization June 30, it is difficult to determine exactly how it will affect the schools. In other business, the board: • Accepted the retirement resignations of Dan Bailey, transportation supervisor, effective June 30, and Mike Snyder, maintenance department, effective June 27. • Approved a five-year contract extension for Romano, who has been with the district for 17 years and superintendent for 12. His current salary is $115,000. • Employed Dominic Albaugh and Erica Leber as paraprofessionals and approved several routine measures.
