Monroeville rallies to top NR in state-ranked matchup

MONROEVILLE — The right player at the right time. Through four innings, the Monroeville softball team had no hits against New Riegel ace Karysn Piper in Thursday's state-ranked non-league match at Clark Park. But trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles put together a two-out rally, capped by senior standout Taryn Tyler's two-run double to left field in the 2-1 victory. With the win, the Division VII No. 10-ranked Eagles improved to 13-0 overall. The No. 8-ranked Blue Jackets fell to 7-2. Genna Bragg led off the sixth with a single on a six-pitch at-bat. But Piper responded by striking out the next two batters. But sophomore Payton Weilnau hit a single to right to put runners on first and second. Tyler then fell behind in the count 0-2, but took a ball, then hit the double to score both runs. Piper singled with two outs in the seventh, but Helmstetter struck out the final batter to end the game. New Riegel scored in the top of the first on back-to-back doubles. But Helmstetter settled in from there. She allowed one earned run on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. At the plate, Avery Rosser had the other base hit for the Eagles (4-0 FC), who have a huge Firelands Conference game vs. Crestview (9-2, 4-0) at 5 p.m. Monday back at Clark Park. Lesch struck out eight with no walks and needed just 85 pitches over her seven innings in the circle. She allowed just a single in the bottom of the second inning. At the plate, Norwalk had 13 hits, including four doubles. Lilly Farmer and Saige Viock were both 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Maddie Gamble also was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Mya Prochnow was 2 for 5 with an RBI. Audryn Ott also had two hits with a double and an RBI. Norwalk hosts Firelands on Friday and Western Reserve for a pair of games on Saturday. Hailee Pylant was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Olivia Yetter was 2 for 5 with a double and two RBIs, while Gracie Thomas doubled with an RBI and Kilgrove hit a solo home run. Paiton Shepherd got the win. She allowed three earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and four walks in seven innings. New London is at Plymouth Monday in FC play. N. Zaida Myers was 3 for 4 with a triple, while Ella Sanders was 2 for 5 with a double and Viola Culler was 2 for 5 with a double and two RBIs. Culler earned the pitching win.
