Comment on walking routes

NORWALK — Children may have a safer walk to school if proposed street improvements take place. Norwalk's Public Works Department seeks public comments on the proposed "Safe School Crossing" project. The project aims to improve traffic signage, signals, and curb ramps and install an "RRFB," or a rectangular rapid flashing beacon, to make pedestrian crossings safer. According to Aaron Osborn, Norwalk's public works director, the project would see the intersections of Benedict Avenue and Christine Avenue and Christie Avenue and Norwood Avenue, as well as a mid-block crossing on Christie Avenue at the entrance to the middle school, outfitted with RRFBs, crosswalk marking enhancements, signage, and curb ramp replacements. Construction is currently anticipated to be completed in 2026. Traffic will be maintained during construction, which is expected to last approximately two weeks. The project will be paid entirely with federal funds. As part of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the city is seeking comments from the public about the proposed project's social, environmental, and economic impacts. Environmental impacts include those associated with historical, archeological, and ecological resources, hazardous materials, and general concerns people might have with the project.
