St. Paul pulls away from Danbury

SANDUSKY — The St. Paul baseball team broke a 6-6 tie after two innings by outscoring Danbury 10-2 the rest of the way in a 16-8 non-league win Thursday at Sports Force Parks. The game was moved from Contractors Park to the turf facility near Cedar Point because of wet field conditions. With the win, the Flyers improved to 4-2 overall ahead of Saturday's 11 a.m. non-league game against Division V No. 2-ranked Edison (6-0). The first three baserunners reached on two walks and a hit batter to start a six-run bottom of the first inning for St. Paul. An RBI fielder's choice from Gavin Thurston and a two-run single by Brady Fritz gave the Flyers a 3-1 lead. Ben Blum then walked and Adam Roth was hit by a pitch to load the bases once again. Isaac Kalizewski then drew a bases loaded walk, and leadoff hitter Jacob Zuccaro reached for a second time in the inning with a two-run single to make it 6-1. After the Lakers (3-3) scored five times in the top of the second to tie the game, the Flyers pulled away for good with five runs in the bottom of the third. Kalizewski singled and Zuccaro walked, then an RBI ground out by Izaac Snyder gave St. Paul the lead back at 7-6. Zuccaro scored on a wild pitch, then Landon Fries walked and also scored on a wild pitch. Blum hit into a fielder's choice to score Gavin Thurston and Gabe Snyder to make it 11-6. Leading 11-8 after five innings, the Flyers then added five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Blum and Roth walked with one out, then St. Paul scored all five runs with two outs. Zuccaro hit a two-run triple, then Izaac Snyder connected for a triple to score Zuccaro to make it 14-8. Fries added an RBI single, and he then scored after two stolen bases and an error on the Danbury catcher. Zuccaro finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Thurston also had two hits with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Izaac Snyder, Fritz and Blum each had two RBIs. Alex Marsh earned the win in relief of Nate Griffin. He went 1 2/3 innings with two unearned runs on no hits. He struck out three and walked four. Thurston then went 3 1/3 innings of scoreless and hitless work. He struck out three with no walks. St. Paul hosts Western Reserve Monday and visits the Roughriders on Tuesday in Firelands Conference play. SJCC 0 MONROEVILLE — The Eagles are off to a 5-2 start following Thursday's run-rule win over St. Joseph in a non-league game at Clark Park. Leading 4-0 after three innings, Monroeville scored six times in the bottom of the fourth. Ethan Smiley started things off with a one-out single, then Reid Wasserman followed with a single of his own to score Smiley. Jake Fries walked and Tristan Wise hit an RBI single to make it 6-0. Fries then scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 7-0, followed by Wise scoring on a passed ball for the eighth run. Alex Dowell closed the scoring with a two-run single to score Hudson Bauer and Landin Hershiser. Wasserman and Dowell were each 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Smiley also had two hits. Colt Clark went four scoreless innings and allowed one hit to earn the win. He struck out eight and walked three. Fries pitched a scoreless fifth. Monroeville is scheduled to visit Crestline Friday before hosting Plymouth Monday and visiting the Big Red Tuesday in a pair of FC games. Fre.
