New London wins in final at-bat

NEW LONDON — The New London softball team improved to 3-0 on the young season with a high-scoring, walk-off win over Black River, 14-13, Wednesday in a non-league matchup between two former Firelands Conference rivals. Black River led 10-2 entering the bottom of the fourth, but the 'Cats rallied and trailed 13-12 entering the bottom of the seventh. Madison Rowland led off with a double, then Gracie Thomas followed with an RBI double to plate her to tie the game at 13-13. Pailee Wilson then put down a bunt, which was misplayed at third base, allowing Thomas to come around and score the winning run. Thomas had three doubles with two RBIs and scored four times to pace New London. Rowland was 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, an RBI, and also scored four runs. Wilson and Paiton Shepherd each singled with two RBIs, while Olivia Yetter and Hailee Pylant each singled with an RBI. In the circle, Addison Yetter got the win in relief. She went three innings and allowed three earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts. New London was scheduled to host Wellington Thursday. Black River 015 430 0 — 13 11 7N. Veanna Helmstetter threw a one-hitter and struck out nine in her five innings in the circle. She also added two hits. The Eagles (3-0) travel to Margaretta Thursday. Ivy Kluding was 2 for 2 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored, while Delany Fields was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Also for Edison, Natalie Desautels was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and also scored four times. In the circle, Abby Cloud pitched two scoreless innings with five strikeouts and no walks for the victory.
